John Barnick

Mr. Barnick is an Industry Solutions Executive (ISE) in the Network Control operation of Ventyx, an ABB company. As an ISE, John is focused on real-time operation systems for transmission and distribution utilities. He has experience with Market Operation Systems, SCADA, GMS, EMS, DMS, OMS and substation automation systems. He has over 35 years of experience in the electric power industry with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and ABB, Inc. including positions in engineering, marketing, sales, corporate strategy, business development, sales management and consulting.
 
John has held several local chapter positions in the IEEE Power and Energy Society, including Chairman of a Power Engineering & Industry Applications Chapter and served on various regional technical committees for electric utility associations. He has taught electric power graduate level courses on High Voltage Systems, managed several high voltage projects, and conducted numerous high voltage field tests and studies. He has authored and published technical papers and reports regarding the electric power industry, including publications for the IEEE/PES and EPRI and made many presentations regarding the electric power industry. His responsibilities included working with regulated and deregulated electric power industry stakeholders, including ISO/RTOs while serving as the Director of Business Development and Sales Manager for the Network Management Business Unit of ABB, Inc.
 
He holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Electric Power Engineering as well as a Minor in Economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Gary Rackliffe

Vice President, Smart Grid Development, ABB North America. 

Gary Rackliffe is the ABB Vice President for Smart Grids North America.  He has been in this position since 2009 and leads ABB's smart grid initiatives in North America.  He recently also became the General Manager for the Smart Grid Center of Excellence located in Raleigh, North Carolina.   

With 30 years of electric grid transmission and distribution experience, Gary is a leading expert on technologies to promote grid reliability and efficiency, and the reliable integration of renewable energy resources into the electric grid. 

Gary is the current chair of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association’s Smart Grid Council and is a member of the DistribuTECH Advisory Committee, the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster Advisory Committee, and the IEC Smart Energy Systems Committee.

Gary holds BS and ME degrees in Power Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a MBA from Carnegie Mellon University.  He is a Registered Professional Engineer and an IEEE Senior Member.  He has co-authored a T&D planning book, and has written numerous technical papers and articles.
