ABB designs, manufactures and installs HVDC and HVAC cable systems for underground applications. Underground high-voltage cables enable a number of advantages such as installations in challenging environments, invisible transmission routes, natural protection of the cables, no audible noise, no electric fields and very low levels of magnetic fields. When the landscape has been restored after a cable installation is complete, the transmission route quickly becomes invisible.
ABB has a vast amount of experience in terms of replacing conventional overhead lines with high-voltage underground cable systems in challenging environments such as densely populated urban settings and environmentally sensitive areas. The 150 kV HVDC underground project Murray Link was commissioned in 2002, and was at the time the world’s longest underground cable with its 2x180 km. At present, the South West Link, commissioned in 2015, is the world’s longest underground transmission system with a total cable length of 800 km and a route of 200 km.
