What are your criteria for recruitment?

Decisions are based on the candidate's job-related skills, experience, competencies and potential. In the case of two or more candidates who are equally suitable, hiring teams consider a number of factors including the team diversity.

How do you make sure your recruitment process is fair?

Being fair and acting ethically is at the heart of the way we do business. We use valid, reliable processes and tools, focusing only on job-related skills, experience, competencies and potential.

All other factors, including – but not limited to – gender, age, faith, political belief, nationality, sexual orientation, disabilities, race and cultural heritage, are irrelevant.

In some countries where we operate, government requires positive discrimination in favor of sections of society that are under-represented in the workplace. ABB supports these initiatives.

What information is required for successful application and what types of questions need to be answered?

For a successful application, you may need to provide the following information:
  • CV / resume in Word or PDF format
  • Email address and contact details
  • Education and work experience
  • Language skills
  • Cover letter

 Additionally, you may have to answer the following questions:
  • Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) related questions, for all positions based in the U.S.
  • Questions that will support the screening process

How long does it take to complete the online application process?

It takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete the application process, though this can also depend on Internet speeds and the browser you use. The registration and first application for a job may take a bit longer but, after the first time, most of your details will be already stored and used for additional applications, except the unique cover letter and any additional questions that may be required for the screening and evaluation process, which may be different each time.

What are the channels through which an application can be submitted?

All of our jobs are published on the website, and this remains the primary channel for application. Alternatively, you may also search and apply through social media channels. For print advertisements or any other channels, instructions will be provided for how to apply for those jobs.

What kind of questions do you ask in interviews?

Questions vary depending on the job you are being interviewed for; however, to find out more about how to prepare, read our interview hints section.

Do you check references without first asking candidates?

No, we always obtain explicit permission before contacting references.

What is your policy on employing members of the same family?

We ensure that no employees are involved in any way in the recruitment of family members. In addition, no employees may have a reporting relationship – direct or indirect – to another family member. In practice, this means that family members do not work in the same department.

Do you use third-party recruitment agencies?

We recruit the majority of our people directly; however, we may occasionally use recruitment agencies, largely depending on local practice.

Do you check medical records?

Where necessary or required by law, medical clearance is required before an offer can be finalized.

ABB will pay any associated costs and under no circumstances are candidates expected to pay. We do not carry out genetic tests.

How long does it take to hear back from the company after applying?

Recruiters normally receive a large number of applications, and a reply may take anywhere between 2 weeks and 2 months after the job opening is posted. In some cases, it could take more or less time, depending on the dynamics and volatility of the business and market conditions.

What is the timeframe of the overall recruitment process?

The timeframe of the overall recruitment process is around 2 to 3 months after the job opening is posted. However, it may also depend on various factors, including volatility of the business and market conditions.

If I am not successful, will I get feedback?

In some countries, this is not possible for legal reasons. Elsewhere, when requested, we give direct and honest feedback to candidates who have been interviewed. It does not only cover the reasons why they were not selected, but as well information about their strengths.

Has anyone ever sent out fraudulent job offers in ABB's name?

Some people have received what appeared to be genuine offers of employment from ABB via e-mail but which turned out to be fraudulent.

"Phishing", as this type of fraud is known, is an e-mail scam targeting many businesses worldwide. The senders are generally trying to obtain personal and/or bank information. They may also be trying to extract money for processing job applications or costs related to "work permits" or "visa working papers".

In other cases, candidates have been asked for payment to secure interviews or guarantee a job.

These e-mails can look authentic, with a company logo or convincing personal details taken from social networking pages. However, these e-mails have no connection with ABB, nor do we use these methods as part of the recruitment process.
