MasterPiece 200 and 200/1 for Advant Master DCS

Migration and support for ABB Asea MasterPiece 200 and 200/1, the first generation controllers from the mid 80's for ABB Asea Master and Advant Master.

In 1984, the MasterPiece 200 controller (MP200) was introduced to the market as a modern, robust state-of-the art controller, ahead of the competition, featuring the MasterBus 200. Functions for analog process control as well as PLC control was handled by one single controller compared to most competition having a DCS for process control and PLC for motor control, valve control as well as for sequencing.

Two years later, the MasterPiece 200/1 controller (MP200/1) was launched, with the most prominent features being redundant CPU, plastic front covers for the boards and Ethernet based MasterBus 300 communication bus. Along with the new controller, the S400 Remote I/O system was introduced, used in a lot of cement and pulp and paper industries where local Motor control centers often where used. This saved a lot of cabling.

After serving customers faithfully for a decade, the MasterPiece 200 and 200/1 was succeeded in 1995 by the Advant Controller family, the next step towards the current AC800M controller.

The MasterPiece 200 hardware was in 2001 moved to the Limited life cycle phase and to Obsolete in 2008, with ABB committed to supply spares parts and parts services until the end of 2015.

MasterPiece 200/1 overview

The MasterPiece 200 controller is rack based with CPU and ten I/O cards in the first rack. Two additional racks could be added, each housing 20 more I/O boards.

The controller was non redundant, communicating via ABBs proprietary MasterBus 200, a 1.5 Mbit serial communication using twisted pair cabling. Software was available in MasterPiece 220 for binary control, MasterPiece 260 for binary and analog control and MasterPiece 280 for advanced process control.

The controller CPU and memory could handle up to 1000 I/O signals, depending on the cycle time requirement. Programs could be assigned with cycle times from 2 seconds down to 50 milliseconds, allowing more effective use of the controller, compared to most contemporary competitor DCS that were limited to having just one cycle time.

Since the introduction of Advant Controller 410 and 450 most of the MasterPiece 200 controllers has been migrated.

MasterPiece 200 life cycle status
The MasterPiece 200 hardware was moved in 2001 to the Limited life cycle phase and to Obsolete in 2008, with ABB committed to deliver spares parts and parts services until the end of 2015.

ABB strongly recommends customer to evolve the Masterpiece 200 controller CPU, memory and communications to Advant Controller 450, while the S100 I/O can be kept untouched. As both MasterPiece 200 and Advant Controller 410/450 uses the same programming language, AMPL,the application code can be preserved to 100 % thus avoiding FAT and new commissioning.

In 1986, the MasterPiece 200/1 was introduced, with more processing power: The controller CPU was changed for a more powerful, and the RAM was increased to 4 Mbyte.

The CPU featured redundancy, with a switchover of 10ms, along with a fast 10 Mbit Ethernet communication over ABBs MasterBus 300, including full redundancy routing with a time sync down to 1 ms. This allowed fast cross communication and event based updating of data to the operator.

Paired with the new CPU, the S400 remote I/O was launched, featuring twisted pair or optical fibre communication. The S400 also included several fast pulse counters as well as cards for weighing functions. A freely programmable communications card offered alternatives to the standard Modbus

From an aesthetic point of view, the aluminum covers on the boards where changed to plastic, with nice laser engraved type id´s, to give the controller a more modern look.

All in all, the MasterPiece 200/1 has been a very successful ABB DCS system, used by customers for more than 20 years - still more than 3000 MasterPiece 200/1 controllers are still up and running!

As both MasterPiece 200/1 and Advant Controller 410/450 uses the same programming language, AMPL, the application conversion process is easy and takes just a few hours.

On the communications side, we also recommended to replace the MasterBus 300 thick coax cable to fibre optic cabling and standard ethernet switches.
