Brake unit is used for resistor braking. It handles the energy generated by decelerating motors for example in emergency stopping. Whenever the voltage in the common DC bus exceeds a certain limit, a braking chopper connects the bus to a braking resistor. Offering includes 1-phase brake unit and 3-phase dynamic brake unit (DBU) which utilizes R8i modules.
There is two different braking concepts. The main difference between the concepts is controllability:
- One-phase brake chopper, on-off controlled (no modulation), brake current depends only on the resistance of the brake resistor. Compact and cost efficient. Used mostly in single drives.
Three-phase brake unit with modulating control. Brake current/power is controlled. Used mostly in multidrives.

Single supply and DC bus arrangement with several inverters reduce line power and system size. Utilize premium control of virtually any type of AC motor with direct torque control (DTC), including induction and permanent magnet motors and synchronous machines.
