Integrated safety functionality including safe torque off as standard

To save you time and money, the integrated safety features in our machinery drives are the best solutions existing on the market. Both drives offer the basic safety function, safe torque off (STO), as standard. Safety functions can be extended further with a range of available options. The fastest and easiest of these is the safety functions module (FSO-12 or 21) available for the ACS880 machinery drives. This plug in safety module works encoderlessly, requiring no external hard-wired logic or feedback from the motor. It is easily integrated inside the ACS880 drive and offers up to 8 different safety functions to speed up your work. ABB can also supply other safety devices and solutions such as safety encoders, light curtains and safety cages, to protect people and property while keeping the machine productive.

Design tools for simplifying your work with safety issues

When designing a machine safety system you must know what is required to achieve conformity. For this, you need a tool that guides you in establishing the target for risk reduction (SIL/PL) based on a hazard and risk assessment, and then choosing the right devices for the safety system to meet the required SIL/PL-level. In an automation system, the PLC needs to connect smoothly with the drive controlling the motor in the machine. 

Safety calculations can be fun and straightforward if you just have right tools to use. Our Functional safety design tool does the bulk of work for you, so you can concentrate your time on your machines. With the aid of FSDT-01 you can create and verify safety function design and generate supporting documentation. The tool supports both standards, ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061, and is aimed at simplifying the process of safety function design and verification. It can be used to generate documentation to support compliance to the requirements of the mentioned standards, as well as the European Machine Directive

Safety communication made easy between drive and PLC

When a safety system includes several drives, a safety PLC is used for controlling drives and machines from a common source. System safety monitoring can be designed using our safety PLC. This way different safety functions can be performed with the application being controlled by one common safety PLC. Our ACS880 machinery drives offer PROFIsafe connectivity over PROFINET, which means communication is safe, fast and more reliable, making communication diagnostics possible. The PLC is connected to the drives with a safety fieldbus adapter module that provides PROFIsafe connectivity. The safety functions module integrated into the drive will provide safety control for the safety PLC. The safety functions module supports PROFIsafe over Profinet communication.
