FACTS installations have a small footprint and therefore minimal impact on the environment. They can provide additional network capacity considerably faster and more economically than the alternative of building more transmission lines.
In addition to their primary role of increasing transmission capacity and improving control in existing as well as green-field transmission networks, FACTS technologies are also used to enhance the efficiency of long-distance power transfer, relieve transmission bottlenecks, and safely integrate intermittent energy sources like wind and solar into the grid.
