Civil Manager

You as a Civil Manager will be a part of the power grids division which is a global leader in turnkey power projects and will be based in Dubai, UAE. The power grids division delivers solutions across the power value chain. This includes system solutions for power generation, transmission technologies, substations and distribution technologies for network management. You will be responsible for overall Civil Works. Design authority for civil engineering discipline with medium to high complexity. Coordinate civil engineering assignments in one or across several projects within the entire value chain efficiently, cost-effectively and in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards and safety requirements. Assign and coordinate execution of civil works on site via subcontractor and collaborates with site construction manager.


Technical contribution:

Act as a technical lead, approves design deliverables. Reviews all project documents for conformity and quality assurance. Anticipate and solve unprecedented problems, crucial issues and/or unique conditions.
Serve as a specialist in the application of advanced concepts and methods.
-Contribute and execute design review meetings and safety by design meetings
-Coordinate internal and external designers and approval authorities as well as client approvals
-Responsible for technical solutions to be executed
-Organize constructability review meetings together with Site Manager, Site Construction Manager and Subcontractor

Sales support:

Prepare proposal/presentation of civil engineering projects/programs (provision of bills of materials, estimated engineering hours, etc.). In collaboration with SCM prepare RFQs, collect and evaluate offers from subcontractors and proposes costs to sales team for civil scope.

-Develop BOQ and RFQs for subcontractor offers
-Evaluate Subcontractor offers.

Contract management:

Support Contract Managers in issuing claims (new/change in scope of work, cost impact, time impact, risk quantifications, etc.). Provide quality solutions as per customer requirement and delivers within budget and contract.
Ensure adherence to safety standards and mitigate potential risks

-Document scope changes with claim potential in both directions
-Identify gaps in contractual documents e.g. specifications

Planning and control:

Create work plans and cost estimates in own area of responsibility. Review and approve scope, budget and schedule for assignments and ensures quality deliverables on time and within targeted cost. Improve effectiveness of work plan in collaboration with other functions.

-Provide civil schedule covering design and execution phase to scheduler
-Ensure proper site reporting with project control relevant figures
-Monitor and track deviations from project KPIs

Risk and opportunity management:

Create and execute strategies for risk and opportunity management in one’s area of responsibility
Identify and manages contract risks taking preventive/corrective actions to resolve any contract/quality/program/cost issues Report any outstanding issues to management, along with recommendations for resolution.

-Give input to risk and opportunity table in tender phase with related figures
-Follow up during execution and take proactive actions


Work with the customer to shape and deliver solutions and seeks customer feedback to drive and deliver improvements.
Attend project meetings and presents specific aspects of civil works assignments.

Supply chain management:

Collaborate with the Supply Chain function to ensure that technical and commercial requirements for equipment or services are communicated and agreed on with potential suppliers.
Provide technical and partly commercial evaluation of supplier proposals and accept as fit for purpose supplied equipment or services.

-Develop RFQs to be released via ABB Procure Tool
-Supports in Construction contractor qualification process
-Evaluates offers, gives recommendations for contract awards

Technical leadership and knowledge sharing:

Represent function in standardization committees and in communication and conferences pertaining to broad aspects of engineering assignments
Act as technical specialist/adviser to senior management Collaborates and networks within ABB and externally.

Processes and Tools:

Review, develop and document quality standards, processes, tools and techniques.
Ensure that engineering activities comply with required safety regulations and contractual requirements.
Contribute towards continuous improvements of processes and tools for engineering efficiency.

-Contributor and executor of local processes, support owner
-Use and develop tools

People leadership and development :

Manage, develop and coach small team of Project Engineers/Designers

-Assigns work packages and leads/supervises peers to execute the work packages within assigned project responsibility
-Checks competencies, identifies gaps and proposes training items with Line Manager, head of Civil Department
-Supports building up talent pool and transfers know how


Must have a degree in Civil engineering with Minimum of 8 years of experience in relevant field
