Health, Safety and Environment Specialist

Tasks:

The primary role of this position is to continually promote HSE and work with the Power Services Management team(s) to instill a safe and healthy work environment for all team members in the group. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day HSE guidance, technical support and leadership to internal and external clients. They will contribute and support the development of various field and shop prevention activities as required for a leading HSE management system and culture. They will ensure that all legal requirements, customer and ABB standards are met when performing field and facility service work. He will work closely with all members of the Corporate HSE team, and communicate activities regularly with appropriate Service Operations Management and Regional HSE Managers. Although primarily foreseen as a field role, the ideal candidate will also have previous working experience in a manufacturing or service shop environment, including a high degree of programs and procedures development and training experience. The HSE Services Specialist will liaise regularly with all ABB stakeholders, clients and authorities.

Specific responsibilities:

1. Coach and support managers and personnel in the identification and analysis of safety hazards, environmental aspects and corrective and preventive actions for all Power Service activities in Canada.
2. Lead all HSE field related activities on project sites this includes the development of site specific documentation, providing site HSE support, liaising with site management and personnel, the client and government officials.
3. Prepare detailed environment and HSE plans for large field projects.
4. Prepare and regularly update HSE manuals and procedures for Power Services.
5. Use a hands-on approach and demonstrate visibility and leadership in both our facilities and at field sites with all stakeholders, including Canadian Corporate HSE as well as the respective ABB North American and Global Product groups.
6. With line managers and personnel perform regular site HSE audits and assist local personnel with compliance issues ensuring all due diligence requirements are met.
7. Coach and mentor field and other technical personnel to ensure HSE is considered in the performance of all activities.
8. Present HSE concerns to management and operations and assist in the problem solving process.
9. Foster a proactive HSE mindset throughout Power Services ensuring compliance is achieved in all facility and field operations.
10. Implement a proactive reporting structure for all issues and ensure proper control measures are implemented under Power Services management team leadership.
11. Cooperate with and coordinate closely with CAABB HSE leadership in communicating issues and actions contemplated to prevent HSE incidents.
12. Assist in the development and delivery of various training programs (e.g. Task observation and feedback, HSE planned inspections, incident investigations, Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, etc…).
13. Contribute to the deployment and implementation of PG/BU/Division HSE requirements and CAABB HSE programs and their annual objectives.
14. Coach and support all Power Services management in the establishment of HSE programs and procedures necessary to maintain ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 registrations.
15. Benchmark, as required, with other companies and ABB businesses engaged in similar activities.
16. Share best practices with HSE team members and other businesses
17. Contribute annually to the update of the HSE strategic plan for Canada
18. Participate and liaise in internal or external audits as required (ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, WCB, COR, government agencies, and Insurance as may be required) and participate as an internal auditor.
19. Participate in incident investigation, reporting and follow-up in accordance with ABB incident reporting protocols, whether local or global and coordinate Early and Safe Return to Work, WCB/WSIB/CSST process in cooperation with the appropriate Regional HSE Manager
20. Participate in HSE committees and sustainability meetings, Corporate HSE meetings, conferences and other activities as requested.

Requirements:

- Bilingual (French/English) preferred.
- College/University graduate in Occupational Health and Safety or in Environment and/or pertinent certification or degree.
- Five or more years of experience in a similar or related field operations position.
- A thorough understanding of field HSE issues with the ability to quickly and pro-actively support managers in the implementation of appropriate corrective and preventative measures.
- Capable of working and delivering in complex working environment and under pressure.
- Experience in Electrical Safety is a definite asset.
- Excellent knowledge of national HSE legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Safety Professional accreditations (CRSP, CSP, CIH, etc…).
- HSE auditing accreditation would be beneficial (ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 or similar).
- Strong knowledge of ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001, and CSA Z462 or NFPA standards/guidelines/specifications would be a definite asset.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
- Excellent computer skills (MS Excel, Word, Power Point, Project, Visio, etc.)
- Adapt at strategic thinking – look for solutions outside the box, strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Pevious experience in WCB/WSIB/CSST applications, Early Safe Return To Work (ESRTW) program implementation.
- Valid driver’s license (drivers abstract required).

Work location

- Brampton, Ontario or St-Laurent Quebec ABB facilities.
- Must be available to travel a minimum of 30% of the time involving some week-ends. (principally within Canada)
