Thesis Work: Worst Case Analysis Tool implementation

You will be part of the Machine Safety team in Kungsbacka. Our unit is part of ABB:s division Electrification Products and has approximately 60 co-workers. Our responsibility is to develop innovative products and solutions for machine safety to customers all over the world.

Uppgifter :

ABB Jokab Safety R&D department develops and maintains functional safety products for use in industrial applications to avoid injuries and deaths. The products that are developed must be free from systematic and random faults, which means that the development must be state of the art, follow applicable standards and undergo rigorous third parity reviews and tests.

The ABB Jokab Safety product range is very wide, everything from emergency stops to advanced safety PLCs. The products mainly consist of mechanics, HW electronics and embedded SW. The electronic circuit design must be robust in order to prevent possible dangerous situations caused by malfunction in the electronic circuit caused by component tolerance variations. The tolerance variations can roughly be divided into initial tolerances, temperature tolerances and ageing tolerances. Worst Case Analysis (WCA) is an analytical method to control the robustness of the electronic circuit design. The ABB Jokab Safety HW design function is in need of a WCA tool to analyze and document the robustness of the electronic circuits.

This thesis treats implementation of a WCA tool and associated processes.

ABB Jokab Safety will provide a list of desired features of the WCA tool. The thesis should start with a compilation and selection of the most appropriate mathematical tool (such as Matlab, Mathcad, Mathematica, etc). There is a need for implementing a user interface between the selected mathematical tool and the user of the WCA tool.

The thesis should at least result in the following outputs:
1. WCA tool
2. WCA tool validation report
3. WCA process

Krav:

In order to be successful, ABB Jokab Safety is convinced that the thesis has to be carried out by two master’s degree students (30 ECTS) in mathematics, electronics engineering, computer engineering or physics engineering. The team of two persons need good mathematic and good programming skills. The most part of the work should be performed on site in Kungsbacka.

The thesis period is flexible, but should start and end during 2018.
