Thesis Work: Enable open standard simulation of control applications

You will be a part of Industrial Automation, Control Technologies in Malmö. Control Technologies is a unit within ABB’s Industrial Automation division. The unit is responsible for development, marketing and sale of automation products – hardware and software – and for monitoring, control and optimization. The unit has automation products for all types of industry. Digitalization offers unique opportunities to combine data from the manufacturing process with other information systems within the company and make information available in real time.

ABB Ability System 800xA is our flagship product for industrial automation and it includes AC800M, a controller family for process control. Control application for the AC800M controllers are developed in our own integrated development environment, Control Builder. These control applications are typically developed and tested offline before they are commissioned in the real plant. The models used for testing are typically also written in Control Builder, but since Control Builder is developed primarily for process control applications and not for physical modeling and simulation, these models are often simple. Also, physical plant models that have been developed in other tools for other purposes cannot be re-used to test the control applications.

The goal of this Master Thesis is to make it possible to test the AC800M control applications against physical plant models that have been developed in other tools, in particular tools developed for physical modeling and simulation. This will mean better possibilities to test the control applications before they are commissioned in the real plant. To do this, the standard FMI (Functional Mock-up Interface) will be used. FMI is an open standard for co-simulation of models in different tools that is in active development and the number of tools with FMI support is increasing rapidly. To simulate models from different tools together, each model is encapsulated as an FMU (Functional Mock-up Unit) and this FMU can then be simulated together with other FMUs using an FMI master, for example, MATLAB/Simulink. In this Master Thesis, AC800M control applications will be encapsulated as FMUs and co-simulated with process simulation FMUs. The main task will be to make it possible to expose control applications as FMUs. For validation, these FMUs will be co-simulated with FMUs developed in other tools.

The Master Thesis will be in cooperation with the Department of Computer Science at LTH.
