Relion^® 615 and 620 series 

Relion 615 and 620 series relays have been designed to unleash the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard for communication and interoperability of substation automation devices. Both products series offer extensive communication capability, together with full support for communication redundancy. The product series are characterized by their compact and withdrawable-unit design, enabling easy installation of the relays.

The latest version of the highly acclaimed 615 series offers advanced fault location of short circuits and earth faults, an increased number of variants with sensor-based phase current and voltage measurement, and additional high-speed outputs to minimize the effects of an arc fault. The 615 series also supports an IEC 61850-9-2 LE process bus solution, allowing high-accuracy time synchronization with sampled values, in addition to fast GOOSE.

The major difference between the best-selling 615 series and its big brother, the 620 series, is in the functional scalability and flexibility of the 620 series. The number of inputs and outputs is also greater in the 620 series relays, enabling a larger number of controllable objects with one device, including upstream visibility of the objects via communication. 

Relion^® 670 series

Relion 670 series are equipped with advanced functionality for series-compensated networks with 1- and 3-phase tripping, voltage control for up to eight parallel transformers, an extended disturbance recorder, and binary and analog data transfer between relays. The relays have been designed to control several objects with a single relay and enable a number of other smart solutions based on functional integration, in order to increase availability and optimize the cost-performance ratio while maintaining high grid reliability.

Relion 670 series relays are available as pre-configured and fully customized. The pre-configured relays can be easily adapted to meet specific power system requirements, whereas customized relays offer full flexibility in application engineering, allowing complete adaptation to customer requirements.

The newest member of ABB’s and control devices, Relion 670 2.0 relay, provides even faster performance with further improved accuracy compared to its previous versions.

Grid automation solutions offer utilities a systematic approach to increasing the level of automation in power systems. Automating secondary substations leads to improved fault detection, isolation and restoration.

Grid automation control cabinets and retrofit-sensors provide a cost-efficient solution for smart secondary distribution. Today‘s distribution network includes a large amount of compact secondary substations (CSS) with ring main units (RMU), of which only a few are remotely controllable. The utilization factor of the integrated transformers is unknown, knowledge of energy flow and faults is lacking, and the quality of the distributed energy is rarely measured.

Implementing remote control, monitoring and measurement does not necessarily require replacing the entire CSS. Instead, ABB’s grid automation solutions provide a cost-efficient upgrade: a retrofit control cabinet, supporting the manufacturer’s motor operating device as well as current and voltage transformers or sensors. The control cabinet is also ideal as an add-on installation in a third-party CSS. Retrofitting improves not only the controllability, but also fault management thus improving the quality and reliability of the grid, with the support of retrofit sensors.

In addition to showing live grid automation demonstrations in the exhibition, ABB will explore the topic at the conference by presenting a project on "Energy efficient grid automation solutions for mixed overhead line and cable networks." The presentation will investigate:
