Digitalization at the heart of change

ABB’s Dr. Chunyuan Gu speaks at Asia Business Leaders’ Forum

At the recent Asia Business Leaders’ forum in Dubai, leaders from across Government and business came together to discuss, among other things, ideas and reforms needed to enable innovation and sustainable development.

H.E. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE cabinet member and UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, opened the forum with a session ‘The Earth and Us’, where he discussed the path to reliable energy being sustainable energy, and Dubai’s role in transforming itself into a global hub for green energy.

Dr. Chunyuan Gu, ABB’s president of the Asia, Middle East and Africa region, and the Minister and Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, participated in a panel session that followed, discussing the impact of digital technologies on future energy systems.

“The increasing focus on integrating renewables into the grid will create a more complex energy system; one that will require solutions that can intelligently monitor and control future grids,” Dr. Gu said. “Digital technologies will be at the heart of this change and enable the creation of a more reliable and efficient energy eco-system.”

As part of the UAEs vision of creating a greener energy system, the Mohammad Bin Rashid Solar Park is the largest single site solar park in the world with a plant capacity of 5,000MW by 2030. It will help to reduce 6.5 million tons of carbon emissions annually. ABB is a technology partner at the plant, with our substation to be the first 400kV station in the UAE connected to integrate solar energy, facilitating reliable and efficient transmission of clean power.

This new Energy Revolution, combined with digitally connected devices, cloud computing and big data, presents the greatest opportunity to deliver a sustainable and more resilient energy system. ABB, with its installed base of 70 million digitally enabled devices, 70,000 digital control systems and 6,000 enterprise software solutions is perfectly positioned to lead this sustainability charge.
