ABB mourns passing of Peter Sutherland, statesman and former ABB board member

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Peter Sutherland, former member of the ABB Board of Directors, who was laid to rest in his home country of Ireland on Thursday. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Maruja, and the rest of his family.

Peter was a greatly admired and valued member of ABB's board of directors from June 1999 to March 2001, and a good friend of ABB. Over the course of his lifetime, he rendered a great service to our company, as well as to his country, to the European Union, the United Nations, and to many other global companies and organizations.

A former Irish attorney-general, EU commissioner, director-general of the World Trade Organization, and UN Special Representative, Peter devoted much of his life to building strong institutions in the service of individual rights, free trade, and greater prosperity. He was a highly successful businessman and served as the chairman of Goldman Sachs International and BP, among many other mandates.

We are grateful to have benefitted from his tremendous experience and wisdom as a member of the ABB Board of Directors, and we are proud of his achievements in so many areas of international affairs and business. In Peter, the world has truly lost an elder statesman.

To his wife and family, we would like to express what an honor and a privilege it was to know Peter. He will be remembered for a long time to come.
