Power generation track

Research and a growing body of real-world experience have shown how advances in control system interfaces can make a big impact on operator effectiveness.

We’ll look at how things like alarm management can boost productivity and reduce human error. We’ll also examine the use of simulations to improve overall plant reliability.


Patrick G. Gex

Mr. Gex began his career as an Associate Mechanical Engineer with Bechtel Power Corporation before cofounding Tech-Assist, Inc. a computer consulting engineering firm where he held the position of Vice President. Early in his career, Mr. Gex held a wide range of positions including Safety Analysis Engineer, Planning and Control Engineer, Licensing Engineer, and also served as Decontamination Liaison between Bechtel and TMI (Three Miles Island). 
As a Vice-President of Tech-Assist, Mr. Gex was involved in the company’s overall management and strategic planning as well as business and product development and software quality assurance.   

Mr. Gex was also responsible for several significant projects including the implementations of the Shift Operation Management software (eSOMS) at major utilities in the United States.  In 2008 Ventyx acquired Tech-Assist. Mr. Gex is currently serving as an Industry Solution Executive for Plant Operation responsible for the promotion of the Ventyx Plant Operation software.Part of his responsibility is to understand client’s needs and requirements in the area of Plant Operation, then present and advise them on the best solution possible.  

Bob Kanel

Bob has worked in the process control industry for over 25 years.  Much of this time has been focused around operational excellence in the areas of Alarm Management, Asset Optimization and Simulation Systems.  Bob led an ABB consulting team helping customers in multiple industries reach their goals in these areas.

He currently works as Technology Manager for Power Generation in the Power Systems division driving the simulation business.  In the past Bob has held various roles in development engineering, systems engineering, systems marketing, and technical sales support.

He holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of Akron.

Tom Maczuzak

Tom Maczuzak has over 20 years of automation experience for various types power and water plants. He currently specializes in advanced alarm management.  Tom has a JD from Cleveland Marshall College of Law, MA and MBA from Kent State University.
