What we do
Experts from three disciplines work to integrate sustainability into all of our processes, ensuring they are understood, implemented, measured and communicated across the whole of our value chain.
Health, safety and environment
Occupational health, safety and environmental (HSE) management is central to everything we do. ABB manages HSE risks and impacts across our operations in compliance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards. HSE professionals, such as occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental specialists, advise and support managers, employees and other stakeholders across the business on key HSE and corporate responsibility (CR) issues.
They work on cross-functional initiatives and drive improvement programs nationally or across business units, raising awareness and standards to build a culture of excellence in HSE. These teams ensure compliance with local legislation and group policies, monitor and report on performance and ensure the efficient and effective application of risk control measures.
Our specialists work to ensure that we identify potentially negative human rights impacts from different types of project work. This involves due diligence on certain projects and advising the business on ways to avoid or mitigate labor and human rights risks.
In addition, our specialists hold courses internally to raise awareness about human rights issues in different countries. They also develop and monitor community projects and represent ABB on corporate responsibility issues with stakeholders such as investors, customers, the United Nations and a range of non-governmental organizations.
Security and crisis management
As a global company, we often deliver products, systems and services in challenging security environments. A network of security specialists monitors security risks and works with the business all over the world to ensure an appropriate level of security for personnel and company assets at customer, project and company sites. Our security teams build our resilience by actively managing risk and building awareness through training on security and crisis management.
Career paths and development
Security, CR, and HSE specialists use their skills and experience to execute complex or specialized projects, often challenging traditional solutions. They build knowledge of the related disciplines in their area of the organization and often work independently, applying established standards and instructing or coaching other professionals.
Entry-level specialists work with senior managers to ensure strategy is implemented consistently around the globe. As you progress, you will develop general business acumen and coaching skills, building on your understanding of specific functions and business areas. You will learn to challenge established procedures and, together with the business and relevant specialists, find ways to optimize the way we work in order to ensure safe, secure and productive practices and working culture.
At the most senior level, sustainability managers and specialists master the full range of coaching techniques and lead large-scale change and development initiatives. Thanks to their comprehensive knowledge of functional domains, they know how to support the business by mitigating risks and adding commercial value.
Security, CR and HSE managers lead, direct and support teams in their respective areas of responsibility at the local business unit, country or regional level. The focus is on building competence and capacity, implementing strategy, monitoring and reporting on performance and providing leadership.
We depend on your growth and development because the more you make of your talent, the better we do as a company. So, in addition to the personalized development plans that we agree on with all our employees, we also support you if you wish to obtain a professional qualification in any areas of Sustainability.

Career flexibility is a key ABB principle. We always try to support you when your interests and priorities change, helping you move between countries, businesses, business lines and functions.
