Worldwide, we maintain seven research centers, one of which is located in Switzerland. Our research center in Baden-Dättwil engages approximately 220 employees from 40 nations. In addition, over 120 students and graduates join our workforce per year.

We are always searching for new solutions for our customers. We concentrate on the continuous development of existing products and services, as well as long-term disruptive innovations, crucial to strengthening our position as a leader in innovation and future growth.

In Switzerland, we put our research emphasis on:

We focus on applied research, which continues within specific business units and brought to the market to find success.

Our research center in Baden-Dättwil works with leading universities, such as the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology Zurich and Lausanne, the University of Cambridge, Carnegie Mellon University and many more.

Career paths and development

There are three main career paths in R&D. We encourage and support you to move between those, exploring the many opportunities we have to offer.

Technical stream

As a graduate you can contribute your theoretical knowledge as well as your creative ideas to our research projects. By working with experienced specialists, you will begin to gain knowledge with our products and solutions.

As a technical expert, you contribute both internally and externally on national and international levels, driving technical developments and innovations. You share your expertise within the organization and the management.

Project management

In our company, R&D is project-based. Due to the uncertainty of their outcome, our projects differ from those elsewhere in our organization.

As a junior project management member, you learn how our procedures and processes work. Afterwards, you have the opportunity to manage small local projects before gradually building up to larger, global assignments. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to take part in regular training and benefit from our mentoring program.

Management stream

Careers in management within ABB’s department of R&D are international, diverse and challenging.

As an entry-level manager, you lead multidisciplinary teams, either in our research centers or within specific business units. You create specific solutions for customer needs and ensure that they are delivered on time and on budget.

On middle-level management, you focus on developing new expertise through research partnerships and recruitment. Furthermore, you work increasingly internationally and support the collaboration with various business units.

As a senior manager, you utilize your expertise and competence to develop global strategies

What we look for

Research and Development profile

Most R&D jobs require a degree in one of our core technologies. Although requirements vary for roles at different levels, a PhD is often a prerequisite.

In general, we look for:

  • The ability to see and keep track of the bigger picture, to use, combine and improve a diversity of ideas
  • The ability to work systematically and structurally, to improve processes and document achievements

  • The ability and interest to remain updated on the newest market trends and ensure that our technologies are appropriately safeguarded
