Offshore wind drives energy sustainability
China has abundant wind resources and has been actively increasing investment to take advantage of wind energy. But there are still difficulties in transmitting power from turbines in remote areas to demand centers.
ABB is the world's leading supplier to the whole wind power industry with over 20 years’ experience. Wind parks around the world use ABB products like generators, motors, transformers low- and medium-voltage equipment to create power, as well as technology to link them to local power grids. Working in the wind power industry also encapsulates ABB's triple bottom line approach to business: such projects lead to clear economic, environmental and societal benefits.
In 2009, ABB supported the country’s first offshore wind project—the Donghai Bridge offshore wind farm in Shanghai, with 40.5 kV SF6 ring main unit gas-insulated switchgears, locally designed to address the specific demands of offshore wind farms in China. Building on that experience, ABB helped develop one of the largest offshore wind farm projects in Asia by supplying box-type substations to Jiangsu Rudong. These substations will help transmit the wind power generated by the farm into the local grid, bringing clean, renewable energy to China’s populous load centers along the Eastern coast. The offshore project won Best Wind Power Project of the Year at Asian Power Awards 2013.
