Energy storage systems for renewables
Renewable energy has gained great momentum of development in China for the past few years thanks to the government’s favorable policy support. China is currently one of the top countries in the world in terms of installed capacity of renewable energy. The Renewables 2014 Global Status Report has shown that China invested more in renewable energy than did all of Europe combined, and it invested more in renewable power capacity than in fossil fuels for the first time in 2014 . However, the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar can influence grid stability. ABB’s energy storage system can effectively tackle such a challenge and help countries like China develop a smarter, more reliable grid system that makes the best use of renewable, environmentally-friendly energy sources.
At the beginning of 2012, ABB provided battery energy storage equipment for China’s first wind and solar energy storage and transmission project. This project, located in Zhangjiakou, Hebei province, is the world’s biggest new energy utilization platform, integrating wind power, solar power, energy storage, and smart transmission technologies. It is a key project of China’s Golden Sun PV Solar Pilot Project and is also China’s largest grid integration PV solar station. Clean power generated by this project will be integrated into North China’s energy grid, adding 600MW of wind and solar energy to power cities like Beijing.
