Local initiatives help to reduce ABB's greenhouse gas emissions

Clear evidence shows that man-made emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) are influencing global climate change.

ABB’s greatest contribution to the reduction of GHG emissions is through our energy efficient and renewable energy products, systems and services. However, we are also committed to reducing GHG emissions in our own activities.

The main sources of ABB’s direct GHG emissions are fuel used in our operations, together with SF6 emissions during production processes and gas handling on site. Indirect (Scope 2) GHG emissions from purchased electricity and district heating constitute approximately 50 percent of ABB’s total GHG emissions.

Internally, we aim to cut GHG emissions from direct use of fuels, from purchased electricity and district heating. We have set a target to reduce ABB’s energy intensity by 20 percent by 2020, from a 2013 baseline. This includes both direct fuel consumption and the use of electricity and district heating for manufacturing processes and to operate buildings. We also focus on continuous improvement in SF6 management to improve handling, leak detection and storage procedures at our sites.
