You as Contract Manager will be a part of the Power Grids division and will be based in Dubai, UAE.The Power Grids division is a global leader in turnkey power projects and delivers solutions across the power value chain. This includes system solutions for power generation, transmission technologies, substations and distribution technologies for network management. Grid Integration delivers stations, system solutions and service for transmission and distribution facilities. The market is driven by the need to create stable electricity grids and for environmental reasons with the aim of increasing the use of renewable energy. We design and build reliable stations both indoors and outdoors. The Position holder, will lead the provision of contract management services for medium to large-size and/or complex projects for the Hub EMEA for EPC Solutions, ensuring all contract and risk management activities are timely and accurately executed protecting ABB’s interests throughout the full projects lifecycle, especially in regards, but not limited, to T&Cs review and negotiation, main risks and opportunities identification and management, variations and claims strategy, and contract closure; leading, developing and supporting also major strategic variations and claims vis-à-vis suppliers and customers in full coordination with the projects teams and Legal, always in accordance with all relevant Group/Division/Business Unit directives and instructions including Company procedures and the Contract Management Framework.


This position will have a variety of accountabilities comprised in different functions of the role including, but not limited to:

1. Contract Portfolio - Governance

Ensure the portfolio of contracts in the business, and follow contract and claim management methodologies in accordance with internal standard procedures.

2. Tender Preparation and Negotiations

Review and comment on commercial and technical tender terms and requirements, and the overall execution strategy taking into account risk, pricing, scope, and schedule. Participate and support throughout the contracts negotiations.

3. Contract Execution (From Project Kick-Off to Project Closure)

Identify the contract baseline (including terms and conditions, specifications, drawings, estimate, proposal, schedule and other documents incorporated in the contract) and highlight areas of potential risk. Ensure timely and accurate execution of commercial aspects in portfolio of contracts (i.e. payments, claims, variation orders, warranties, provisions, guarantees, etc.). Ensure that for each project, contract and claim strategies are prepared, monitored and followed by the Contract Management in full coordination with the relevant project managers.

4. Contract Closure

Verify that both parties to the contract have fulfilled their contractual obligations and there are no responsibilities outstanding. Document and communicate any deficiencies to all appropriate parties as part of the closeout process. Assess success of the contract, determine if there are any lessons learned and ensure communication to the projects teams for current and future projects.

5. Contract and Claims

Establish and enforce standard change methodologies in portfolio of contracts to identify changes and quantify the additional time and compensation due to ABB as per the contract, define approval requirements and communicate changes to the customer. Enforce and defend ABB's contractual interests vis-à-vis customers and suppliers throughout the projects lifecycle, including monitoring and assessment of changes and deviations, as well as defending and enforcing claims. In cooperation with Legal, develop negotiation strategies, support negotiations, and handle formal dispute resolution (mediation, litigation, arbitration or others). Notify and liaise with Legal to report major claims and keep them updated on any critical developments during project execution.

6. Purchasing

Support drafting of purchase orders, contracts and subcontracts, ensuring they contain appropriate terms to the flow-down of main contract terms, as well as ensure risk and opportunities management under said purchase orders, contracts and subcontracts.

7. Risk Management

Analyze contract terms to highlight areas of potential opportunity and risk, such as ambiguities, omissions and conflicts, as work proceeds. Seek advice from Legal to draft, negotiate and finalize agreements during the Sales and Project Execution phases. Develop and implement risk mitigation and opportunity plan in concert with Division, Business Unit, Product Group, Hub, LPG and/or projects managers as it may be required on a case-by-case basis.

8. Insurance

Ensure contract insurance provisions are adhered to and coordinate with Insurance Risk Management regarding occurrences that may be covered by customer or ABB provided insurance.

9. Export controls

Seek advice from Legal (Export Control) to ensure accurate handling of all export control matters and ensure close review of all contracts and projects with regard to restrictions on exports, considering countries, customers or products involved and the respective laws and ABB regulations.

10. People leadership and development

Ensure (with HR Manager support) that the area of responsibility is organized, staffed, skilled and directed. Guide, motivate and develop direct/indirect subordinates within HR policies


Ideally you should have a university degree in Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Business Administration, Law or an equivalent degree with at least 12 years of experience in EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts, preferably in the energy industry. Apart from this experience with projects of different size and complexity and contractual types is essential along with knowledge of FIDIC, NEC3 and similar bespoke contracts is a must
