Mechanical Designer

Tasks:

In support to a manufacturing engineering team focused on a profitable, efficient and lean production methods (Lean Manufacturing), and reporting to the Head of Maintenance, the Technical Coordinator of the Machining Shop is responsible for valuing and coaching technical skills in addition to designing and drawing dies for the manufacture of sheet metal products.

• Lead project execution at the workshop;
• Maintain the die base by setting the criticality of each;
• Demonstrate a vision of plant improvement opportunities;
• Support the engineering group as part of project developments:
- Brainstorming
- Design
- Post-mortem analysis
• Participate in the implementation of machinery, conveyors, reconfigurations;
• Implement SMED principles to optimize production time in different departments;
• Participate in the upgrade of the press installed base;
• Conduct research and development of new processes:
- Tapping of dies
- Modification of material
- Application of coatings
• Maintain relationships of trust with external machine suppliers;
• Lead the production of new products:
- Ensure availability of spare components
- Coordinate initial productions
• Provide technical support to other ABB plants:
- Iberville
- Saudi Arabia (travel to China)
• Establish and maintains die specifications;
• Participate in feasibility studies using an existing design, sketch, specifications or part;
• Support the Purchasing Department for the acquisition of die components:
- Act as the contact person to the suppliers
- Ensure follow-up of revisions
- Provide the necessary drawings and modifications
• Collect the required design data;
• Make preliminary layout drawings, model cutting patterns and tool detail drawings;
• Liaison with machining shop technicians to agree on Digital Control Manufacturing (DCM) methods;
• Design, calculate and draw dies and components using Pro-E software;
• Ensure budgets and deadlines are met;
• Provide technical support to technicians in the problem-solving process related to tooling, various alloys and manufacturing processes;
• Provide technical support to the production team to correct out-of-control situations in relation to dies.

Requirements:

• Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Aided Tool Design or other related training related to the desired profile
• 10 years of experience in the design of progressive dies used to manufacture sheet metal products
• Knowledge of conventional and digitally-controlled machining processes
• Experience in 3D design with CREO
• Rigor and attention to detail
• Interpersonal abilities, teamwork spirit and communication skills
