Known as ‘Las Vegas on the Amstel’, the Ziggo Dome is the Netherlands’ premier entertainment venue. Since its opening in 2012, the arena has welcomed some of the world’s biggest artists, from Madonna and George Michael to Lady Gaga. Inspired by live music, the venue has an acoustically-focused design and aims to deliver the optimum experience for both audience and artist. Within 3 years of opening, the Ziggo Dome reached 5th place in terms of busiest venues worldwide.
For a venue like the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, flexibility and energy efficiency are key elements to its economic success. It must at one moment meet the needs of famous musicians and then at another, host a sporting event, a gala dinner, a television show or a musical.
Behind the scenes, the building consumes a huge amount of power, especially during a concert. It is essential that the arena’s electrical infrastructure is the best that it can be – a power failure would ruin the experience for the Ziggo Dome’s 17,000 visitors and high profile artists.
To manage the whole building complex, a user-friendly operation cannot be missing.
ABB were chosen as a trusted supplier, because they can provide everything from a single source, without compromise. This package includes ABB i-bus® KNX, an intelligent installation system, as well as ABB switchgear and ABB enclosures to manage the electrical flow.
The possibilities of the KNX system are endless; for the Ziggo Dome we specifically focused on the lighting. The lights for the entrances and corridors, as well as the stage and surrounding areas, can be managed in their entirety with one flick of a switch. In addition, all other lights can be switched on and off with KNX as well.
This means that the following can either be linked up to, or switched on or off with KNX: the building management system, the magnets that are part of the fire alarm system, emergency exits, exterior lighting, overhead doors and the timers for the lighting columns. This contributes to the safety and security required for a concert venue. ABB supplied the emergency lighting, which remains illuminated even in the case of power failure, and clearly directs visitors and staff to the nearest emergency exits.
Last but not least user friendly operation made the difference. ABB offers the best solution to face the complexity and size of the building in relation to ease of use: managing and controlling the building with a mobile device.
Power usage is tracked, providing maximum clarity on where and how electricity is used, enabling effective energy management analysis to save and split costs.
