Future trends of electrical propulsion and implications to ship design

During the last decade, the electrical propulsion fleet grew three times faster than the combined global fleet. This whitepaper explores the drivers behind this development and provides an outlook into the future trends in the area, such as power distribution in DC and energy storage, and how these technologies will influence ship design.

Electrical propulsion

The growth of the electrical propulsion fleet led some of the major electric power companies to develop new solutions that further improve the performance of electrical propulsion. Examples are the distribution in DC and hybrid systems with batteries. In some applications, batteries can be used as a main power source, while super capacitors are best fit for repetitive charge and discharge cycles. DC power distribution delivers biggest benefits in applications where power demand is much lower than the total installed power.
