With increasing level of automation also penetrating into secondary substations, thanks to smart grids and microgrids, it becomes imperative for secondary substations to also be connected amongst each other for distributed applications and also to Control Centers hosting SCADA, DMS applications. Since these secondary distribution substations are generally distributed in urban areas or in remote rural areas, the only viable medium of communication is using public mobile networks.
Using the Arctic product family, another 'layer' of communication solutions is enabled over the substation 'layer' (eg. FDIR, LC1000, GA solutions etc.) to achieve the objectives.
The solution comprises of the ARx600 (x=C/G/M) wireless gateway device with or without local IO handling at the secondary substation and ARM600 M2M gateway at the remote end (Control Center).
The solution components comprise of AC800M for loop supervision and control, HMI, UniSec secondary distribution switchgear comprising of motor-operated switch-disconnector units, REF615 units or RIO600 as fault passage indicators and sensors and communication equipment at every transformer substation. Applied to UniSec switchgear, the solution guarantees a reaction time, if faults occur, of less than 1 second for localizing and isolating the fault and reconfiguring the network, by advantageously using IEC 61850 GOOSE communication profile.
- The solution allows the fault to be detected, isolated and the network to be reconfigured.
- It can be applied in networks featuring switchgear with motor-communication operated switch-disconnectors or circuit breakers equipped with Relion REF615 relays and current and voltage combi sensors.
