SF6-free medium voltage switchgear

Sustainability is not just a buzzword

ABB has been developing and deploying alternatives to the greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) on the path towards greater eco-efficiency and lower environmental impact.

Since more than five years ABB offers medium-voltage gas insulated switchgear (GIS) with AirPlus™, a groundbreaking eco-efficient gas mixture with 99.99% lower global warming potential (GWP).

In addition to AirPlus, the eco-efficient portfolio also includes Dry Air, which is a natural gas and suitable for lower voltage applications up to 12 kV.

Key benefits

Climate friendly
Keeping all SF6 gas-insulated switchgear benefits
Proven SF6-free technology

AirPlus is a pioneering gas mixture that reduces global warming potential by almost 100 percent.

As an innovative leader, ABB has delivered this proven AirPlus technology to the global market since
2015.

AirPlus combines more than 85 percent Dry Air with up to 15 percent 3M Novec insulating gas.

The switchgear becomes greener while offering a similar user experience as in SF6 switchgear.

Our safe low-pressure design has similar dielectric insulation benefits, footprint and reliability as SF6 switchgear.

AirPlus is suited to cover the whole medium voltage range up to 40 kV, both for primary and secondary distribution switchgear and ring main units (RMU).

For lower voltage applications up to 12 kV, Dry Air complements ABB’s sustainable switchgear portfolio. Global demand is growing, and more than 2,500 units of our eco-solutions have already been installed since 2015.
