ABB enhances wireless point-to-multipoint offering for utilities

Next-generation ArcheOS and TeleOS hardware and software boost communication network reliability, performance and security

ABB announces its latest version of software for its TeleOS and ArcheOS product lines as well as upgraded ArcheOS 4000 radios. TeleOS and ArcheOS are sub-Gigahertz point-to-multipoint (PTMP) and point-to-point (PTP) radios that provide uncompromised wireless connectivity for utility field communication networks.

“We’re proud to release our next generation of wireless PTMP radios and operating software that meet our utility customers’ need for increased reliability and security in their wireless field communication networks,” said David Goddard, responsible for the ABB wireless portfolio.

The latest software for TeleOS PTMP radios, which operate in unlicensed frequency bands, enhances network reliability by enabling spatially diverse redundant masters. Conventional redundant master schemes locate both the primary master radio and its backup at the same tower. While the conventional approach offers some added reliability, communication will fail if the entire tower location is disabled, say, by a lightning strike. With spatially diverse redundant masters, the master and backup radios can be placed at different towers. Endpoint radios can be programmed to connect to multiple masters. If the endpoint’s primary master fails, it will connect to a backup master, ensuring continuous communications, even if an entire tower location is disabled.

Mobility is another new feature of the TeleOS software. By programming endpoint radios to connect to multiple masters, devices connected to TeleOS endpoint radios can roam throughout the RF coverage area, connecting to the master that offers the best RF link.

For enhanced security, new operating software for all TeleOS and ArcheOS radios creates a read-only management access tier. Network administrators can now divide management access into two levels of privileges: a read-write tier for users with the authority to make changes to the network and a read-only tier for users with permission to monitor the network but not to change configuration.

The ArcheOS 4000 PTMP radio, operating in 400 MHz licensed spectrum, increases maximum conducted transmit power to 10 W. Higher output power, plus enriched encoding, boosts the radio’s range and performance. The new ArcheOS 4000 is also compliant with the European Commission’s Radio Equipment Directive (RED).

The new version of the ArcheOS 7000, operating in 700 MHz licensed spectrum, also increases maximum conducted transmit power to 10 W, boosting range and performance.

All products in the ABB TropOS, MicrOS, TeleOS and ArcheOS product lines are managed by ABB’s SuprOS communication network management system. SuprOS provides network-wide visualization tools for fault, configuration and performance management from a single console.
