  • With vehicles being the biggest carbon emitters, 42% plan to invest in the decarbonization of their haulage fleet by 2026 and 68% plan to electrify at least 25% of their fleets by 2030

Today at Resourcing Tomorrow, Europe’s largest mining event, mining lead at ABB Max Luedtke said: “With 42% of leaders planning to invest in the decarbonization of their haulage fleet by 2026, we must take action now, together as an industry”. The call comes as ABB’s recent report, Mining’s Moment, found that 67% of mining leaders are confident that they will hit their 2030 sustainability targets and that 53% are planning a significant or complete transformation of their mining operations in the next five years to support decarbonization.

With vehicles being the biggest emitter of greenhouse gas, the report identifies that the industry is working to reduce its impact. 42% of respondents plan to invest in the decarbonization of their haulage fleet by 2026, while 68% plan to electrify at least 25% of their fleets by 2030.

“We say it is mining’s moment because if action has not been taken, it must happen now,” says Max Luedtke, VP and Business Line Manager Mining, ABB Process Industries. “The industry needs to take decisive action that will affect change fast enough. The picture is positive overall, with 67% confident that they will hit their 2030 sustainability targets. However, only 15% of those are very confident, while 52% are quite confident. Add to this the fact that 15% of respondents do not believe they will meet their ambitions in the same timeframe, with 30% reporting being behind schedule with their decarbonization goals, and the picture becomes more urgent. This is the both the moment for mining companies to act, as well as for those already decarbonizing to get ahead and succeed.”

ABB’s Max Luedtke will deliver his keynote address ‘Mining’s Moment: New approaches to innovation and collaboration in electrification, automation, digitalization and robotics’ at 3pm during the Resourcing Tomorrow conference and exhibition in London.
