History Suite Riccione: A blueprint for safe, smart and sustainable hospitality

How do you improve the guest experience and reduce energy consumption without compromising the character of a hotel?

That was the challenge facing History Suite Riccione, a boutique hotel on Italy's Adriatic coast known for its distinctive style and attention to detail. The hotel wanted to modernize its infrastructure, improve day-to-day operations and reduce energy use, while preserving the atmosphere guests had come to expect.

To achieve this, History Suite worked with ABB, supported by electrical distributor EDIF and system integrator Radio Bonetti snc, to upgrade key building systems across the property.

The hotel wanted technology that would work quietly in the background, helping guests enjoy a comfortable stay while making it easier to manage the building.

Creating a more comfortable stay

ABB's i-bus® KNX system now controls lighting, climate and room functions throughout the hotel. This gives staff greater control over the building while helping to reduce unnecessary energy use.

Design was equally important. ZENIT wiring accessories were selected to complement the hotel's contemporary interiors, ensuring the technology blended naturally into the guest environment.

The upgrade also improved communication and access throughout the property. ABB Welcome M video door entry system helps staff manage access more effectively, while a hands-free intercom system connected directly to the reception means guests are always just one call away from assistance.

Supporting reliable day-to-day operations

Behind the scenes, upgrades to the hotel's electrical infrastructure have helped create a safer and more resilient environment for guests and staff. System pro E® energy sub-distribution boards, together with ABB protection devices, including Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) and Residual Current Devices (RCDs), help ensure safe and reliable operation throughout the building.

Reducing energy use and supporting sustainability goals

Alongside improving the guest experience, History Suite wanted to take a more sustainable approach to managing the property.

A photovoltaic (PV) system now helps the hotel generate renewable energy on site. Together with better control of lighting, climate and other room functions through ABB i-bus® KNX, the hotel estimates that energy consumption has been reduced by around 50 percent, lowering operating costs while reducing environmental impact.

To support the growing number of guests travelling by electric vehicle, the hotel also installed ABB Terra AC charging stations, adding another service that reflects its long-term commitment to sustainability.

A partnership built around the hotel's needs

The project brought together expertise from across the local supply chain.

EDIF supported the selection and supply of the technologies used throughout the project, working closely with ABB, the system integrator Radio Bonetti snc. This collaborative approach helped ensure that every solution was aligned with the hotel's requirements, from guest-facing technology through to the building's electrical infrastructure.

The result has been a better experience for guests, simpler day-to-day management for staff and significant reductions in energy consumption.

A model for modern hotel upgrades

History Suite Riccione shows what is possible when existing hotels invest in the right technology.

Rather than changing the character of the property, the upgrade has helped the hotel build on its strengths – improving comfort, enabling more efficient building operations and reducing energy use at the same time.

For hotels looking to modernize their infrastructure, the project offers a practical example of how technology can support both sustainability goals and the guest experience, without compromising what makes a place unique.
