Supporting the growing need for digitalization of F&B customers in Indonesia

Pioneering technologies will support in the industry.

Food and beverage is not only a large and fast-growing industry, it typically continues its growth path even when other industries are in a downturn. People experience the industry’s products several times a day, and expect industry to meet very high standards in terms of food safety and traceability of ingredients. At the same time, manufacturers are constantly facing challenges in the market, including pressure on margins from volatile commodity prices, changes in consumer demands and regulatory compliance related to food safety. They have to optimize productivity, without compromising quality of the final product.

For many years, ABB has been supporting its food and beverage customers with pioneering technologies that help them enhance efficiency and productivity. ABB’s solutions help the industry achieve their sustainability, operational and financial targets, embrace digitalization and benefit daily from predictive, condition-based maintenance with reliability in focus. These solutions were presented at a customer event titled “Reliable solutions for a sustainable food future” held on March 28, 2019 in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

South Sulawesi’s capital, Makassar, has enjoyed spectacular growth in the past few years with rapid infrastructure developments and an increasing number of shopping centers, business districts, hotels and shop-houses in the city. It also serves as the center of the production and processing of several food and beverage related industry segments such as agriculture, plantation, edible oils, feed mills, hatcheries, fisheries, dairy and beverage.

Recently, ABB deployed its IRB 460 robots at PT Makassar Tene, the sole sugar refinery in the city, for the palletizing process of its sugar mill to increase food safety, productivity, efficiency and greater flexibility, as compared to previous manual operation. The IRB 460 is the fastest palletizing robot in the world, making it perfect for end-of-line and bag palletizing applications.

“Indonesia will not only continue to see impressive growth in the food and beverage industry but also a growing appetite for digitalization within this industry,” explained Timo Sipila, ABB’s F&B Industry Segment Leader in Indonesia. “ABB is committed to a sustainable food future, supporting improved product quality, enhanced food safety and more efficient use of production assets, through its industry-leading digital solutions.”

ABB’s F&B Customer Day presented an exciting line-up of ABB’s integrated technology portfolio for the industry, including a mini exhibition comprising a wide range of reliable solutions to help F&B manufacturers overcome their business challenges throughout the complete production process. ABB’s technology showcase in the exhibition area includes integrated low voltage motor, variable speed drives, robotics, control systems, measurement and analytics products, electrification products, grid edge technology and asset management solution.
