ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order from the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), the public utility which generates, transmits and distributes electricity in the country, for a comprehensive network monitoring and control solution that will enable the monitoring and control of its power distribution network. The new system will help the utility with management of electricity demand and improve power supplies by reducing the frequency and duration of outages experienced by customers.
Malawi, in southern Africa is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast and Mozambique on the east, south and west. With increased demand and consumption, it is working on improving the quality and reliability of supplies as well as enhancing access to electricity for rural communities, who make up a large part of its 15 million strong population.
