ABB received multiple recognitions for its power plant solutions at the Asian Power Awards 2017 held in Bangkok last night, in conjunction with the Asia Power Week conference and exhibition. ABB's solutions won the Gold Award in the Fast Track Power Plant of the Year categories, the Silver Award in the Solar Power Project of the Year and the Silver Award in the Duel Fuel Power Project of the Year, underlining the cutting edge of ABB's digital control and excitation technologies and how they make a significant contribution to power projects that are changing the utility landscape.

In the first category - Fast Track Power Plant of the Year - ABB won for its retrofit of the excitation systems at the 630 MW PLTU Pacitan coal-fired power plant in Pacitan, East Java province in Indonesia. This plant is part of the 10,000 MW fast-track program launched by the Government of Indonesia a few years ago. The solution, a UNITROL 6000 X-power unit, was delivered four times faster than standard projects.

ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus control technology was the solution supplied to the winning Solar and Duel Fuel Power Projects of the Year. Both significant projects, the former is the 648-megawatt (MW) Adani solar photovoltaic power plant in Kamuthi, southern India, which is the world's largest solar plant in a single location and contributes around 10 percent of the country's solar capacity. The latter is the expansion of the 950 MW Ghorashal power station in Narsingdi district, 50 kilometers north-east of Dhaka, Bangladesh, to which a new 400 MW unit running on natural gas and heavy fuel oil has recently been added. Apart from the control system, at Adani ABB is providing plant electrification and substation solutions, and at Ghorashal a training simulator which virtually recreates the actual plant, improving operator efficiency.

Symphony Plus serves as the digital backbone for both projects, integrating the five plants at Adani into a single virtual (digital) 648 MW mega project and controlling the heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine, balance-of-plant and electrical systems at Ghorashal - while helping ensure overall grid stability for both. Part of the ABB Ability digital portfolio, Symphony Plus facilitates data collection and uses an intelligent data analysis algorithm to transform this into meaningful information for effective decision-making. With a century of control technology experience and a focus on digitalization-driven progress, ABB is planting its Roots to the Future.

"We are honored and proud to receive these awards," said Kevin Kosisko, Managing Director of ABB's Power Generation & Water business unit. "These recognitions are proof of our commitment to provide cutting-edge solutions and services, combined with over 100 years of control technology innovation and deep domain expertise, underlined by our continued selection and on-time delivery for major power projects around the world."

Now in its 13th year, the Asian Power Award is the region's most prestigious recognition of groundbreaking projects and initiatives in the power sector, organized by Asian Power magazine.

ABB Ability Symphony Plus is the latest generation of ABB's highly successful Symphony family of control systems. With more than 6,800 systems installed in the past 35 years and more than 60 gigawatts of additional power capacity installed during the last six years, much of it in the power generation and water sectors, ABB has one of the largest installed bases of distributed control systems in the world.
