The Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme ‘CEMARS’ is the one of the world’s first internationally accredited greenhouse gas (GHG) certification schemes under ISO 14064. The annual audits check and verify that both the methodology we use to measure our carbon emissions are accurate and that the reduction targets we set ourselves are sufficiently challenging to meet the standards and expectations set by the scheme.
With an extensive portfolio of carbon-reducing solutions to offer our customers, it's important also that we can continue to lead by example by eliminating carbon from our own operations and in our supply chains.
David Hughes, ABB UK Managing Director commented, ‘It's great to be able to announce that we've recently passed another annual CEMARS audit and can show that we have reduced our carbon emissions by an impressive 5% over the previous 12 months.’
David Day, Country HSE Manager, advised "This is an amazing achievement and clearly demonstrates that we are reducing the impact our operations are having on our planet and doing our bit to fight climate change. But our work does not stop here – there is more to do to help protect our world for future generations”
How can we reduce the carbon we consume?
Over half of the carbon emissions generated by ABB in the UK come from just two sources: Consumption of electricity and business mileage.
David Day says "Clearly, coronavirus will have impacted our carbon emissions for the forthcoming year and will hopefully lead to a step-change reduction as we move permanently to greater levels of remote provision of services in the 'new normal. However, there is much more we can do as an organization, for example by introducing more carbon-efficient transport such as electric vehicles for the journeys we do make, powering our operations from renewable energy sources, investing in more energy efficient plant and equipment, or changing our behaviour to use less energy.”
David Hughes commented "There's no doubt passing another CEMARS audit is a great achievement. Over the last 6 years we have achieved a year on year emissions saving, which demonstrates our long-term commitment to carbon reduction. Now with over 60% of our UK portfolio connected to helping our customers reduce their own carbon emissions, it's great to be recognized by an international body and be able to show that we are 'getting our own house in order'. Now to move to the next stage of improvement, watch this space!"
Nearly 60 percent of ABB’s global revenues are derived from technologies that directly address the causes of climate change by facilitating increased energy efficiency, the integration of renewables into the energy mix and the conservation of natural resources. The company is on track to reach 60 percent of revenues by the end of 2020.
