High altitude solar plant, Italy


ABB supplied the solar inverters for a plant at 3,452 meters on Mont Blanc’s Pointe Helbronner, to support the energy needs of a new cable car station.

A 13.3 kWp solar panel plant at the Pontal d’Entrèves’ base station covers an area of 160 square metres and a 12.9 kWp plant at Pointe Helbronner covers an area of 120 square meters.

The challenging environment of the plant required a solution that could withstand the extreme weather conditions and the rarefied atmosphere of such a high altitude.

The solar panel plant generators are connected to solar inverters supplied by ABB. Two ABB string inverter models provided the optimum solution.

PVI-3.6-TL-OUTD-S

The presence of two solar panel orientations led to this choice. It has (along with all UNO inverters with a power rating over 3kW) a double input. This allows separate management of two generators with different working conditions using a single inverter.

PVI-6000-TL-OUTD-S

This inverter is part of the UNO family of single-phase inverters that represent the most efficient solution for the majority of rooftop installations. UNO family inverters are also ideally suited to resist extreme environmental conditions.
