Hatta Villa – where ambition meets innovation in the UAE desert

The United Arab Emirates is one of the most sun-drenched regions in the world and has been at the forefront of harnessing the power of the sun during the latest resurgence of renewable energy integration.

Now, UAE has announced plans to invest $163 billion to generate almost half the country’s power needs from renewable sources by 2050, with the aim to increase clean-energy contributions to 50% by 2050.

While ambitious, the goal is aligned to the growing trend of ensuring that renewable energy generation and consumption play an integral role in servicing ever-growing energy consumption. Several projects have been commissioned in order to achieve this goal under the Hatta Comprehensive Development Plan, one being the Hatta project – the installation of solar panels across 600 villas for all UAE nationals in Hatta.

The project spans 200km and falls under Shams Dubai, which is installing solar panels on buildings throughout Dubai to not only provide self-generated solar power in all homes but also to generate electricity that can be fed into the electricity grid, ultimately reducing reliance on fossil-burning electrical generating plants.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) were tasked with finding a partner to the needs of this project. Dewa decided to rely on ABB, based on a proven track record in developing equipment and technology designed for the challenging environment conditions in the UAE, giving installers confidence and peace of mind. They also knew that ABB were able to provide a high level of service and support in the region, with a quick response time.

Hatta is considered a relatively remote location, with the majority of utility providers and installers being located in Dubai. To provide quick responses or recommendations, a digitally enabled monitoring system would play a vital role. ABB’s solution was to supply 600 UNO-DM-PLUS solar inverters, featuring integrated digital connectivity. This solution enabled:

  • Reduction in energy bills by up to 40% for villa owners
  • Real-time visibility of inverter performance, providing clear visibility over energy consumption
  • Remote monitoring of inverters, reducing downtime through proactive maintenance
  • Simple plug-and-play installation, reducing impact of maintenance for both installers and residents

Given the scale, nature and location of the installation, the importance of remote monitoring combined with plug-and-play functionality could not be overlooked. The clear benefit to installers and residents was the ability to maintain the installations without the need to disturb residents.
