Metro Warsaw Line 2, Poland

Traction substations to power new metro line in the city of Warsaw integrating the reuse of braking energy

ABB has been awarded the contract to construct four combined traction and auxiliary substations rated at 15 kV / 825V DC / 400V AC and three auxiliary substations rated at 15 kV / 400V AC for the new Warsaw metro line 2. The construction of the new metro line is undertaken by the joint venture AGP Metro Polska.

As part of the turnkey project, ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, erection, commissioning and start-up of the substations. Each of the DC traction substations will be equipped with four transformer-rectifier groups rated at 2 MW each.

One of the substations is equipped with a 40 MJ energy storage system of ABB’s product family ENVILINE ™ based on double-layer super-capacitors to exploit the recovered braking energy from the metro cars.

ABB will also be responsible for the network management system (SCADA), which will integrate with the existing system that manages metro line1.
