TOSA flash-charging e-bus, Geneva, Switzerland

Enabling emission-free public transport in Geneva

ABB’s TOSA e-bus solution was selected by Transports Publics Genevois (TPG), Geneva’s public transport operator after the successful pilot of the first such e-bus on the route from Geneva airport to the Palexpo exhibition center.

The Line 23 carries more than 10,000 passengers a day from between the airport and the suburban Geneva. With the replacement of diesel buses by TOSA e-buses the noise level will be significantly reduced and carbon dioxide emissions will be lowered by as much as 1,000 tons per year.

High-capacity articulated TOSA buses will depart from both terminuses at 4.5-minute intervals during peak times. ABB deployed 13 flash-charging stations along the 12 kilometers urban transit bus route, as well as three terminal and four depot feeding stations.

The fleet of 12 buses built by the Swiss bus manufacturer HESS is equipped with an innovative and highly efficient ABB drivetrain system and powered by ABB’s flash-charging technology. The energy from the roof-mounted charging equipment can be stored in compact batteries, along with the vehicle’s braking energy, powering both the bus and its auxiliary services, such as interior lighting.

The complete fleet will enter passenger service in March 2018.
