Tram Berne West, Switzerland

Delivering power for a new tramway line connecting the western part of the Capital of Switzerland

The new tramway line “Tram Berne West” with a total length of 6.8 km is serving 30‘000 residents and 15‘000 jobs in a dynamically developing area in the western part of the City of Berne.

The contract of ABB involved the design, supply, installation and commissioning of 3 DC traction substations feeding the new tramway line with 600 V. Two existing substations have been refurbished, whereas one has been built completely new in order to cope with the additional traction power demand for the new tramway line.

Furthermore, the contract also covered two additional DC traction substations feeding the new and modern tramway depot of BERNMOBIL at the Bolligenstrasse in Berne.

The power distribution network of the local utility operated at 10 kV provides power to the delivery points. Rectifier substations are converting from alternating current to direct current, feeding the overhead line with the required traction voltage.
