Enhancing food safety at Cargill's poultry processing facility in Thailand

ABB's stainless steel washdown motors meet unique requirements of uncompromising safety and hygienic operations

ABB has secured a contract, through its channel partner, SSB Siam Co., Ltd., to supply motors to Cargill Meats (Thailand) Limited, to help run its poultry processing facility in Nakhon Ratchasima province.  The leading agribusiness and food giant, Cargill is currently expanding its poultry processing facility and is expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2018. The stainless steel washdown motors from ABB will ensure efficient and reliable operations, helping meet the high quality and safety standards of the customer and the increasing demand for chicken products.

One of Cargill’s focus areas for the facility is to install more efficient equipment and expand the facility’s cold storage capabilities. With ABB’s food-safe design of electric motors for cold storage, the stainless steel washdown motors proves suitable for use in the food industry, or in any other applications where motors are commonly exposed to moisture, humidity and specific chemicals that cause corrosion.  Their flexibility and durability are enhanced, which can yield minimal operating expenses while increasing uptime and improving total cost of ownership.

“Food safety is the starting point when it comes to hygiene in food manufacturing process, and especially for poultry, an unbroken cold chain is a must.  We are proud to play a part in Cargill’s uncompromising approach to food quality and safety by delivering our reliable and energy efficient technologies,” said Thachapong Chimklai, ABB’s Sales Manager for Motors and Generators business in Thailand.

Growing global appetite

Demand for poultry meat has consistently increased at around three times the rate of population growth over each of the past five decades, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). According to FAO, global demand for poultry meat will increase by up to 85 percent by 2020, when compared to demand in 1995. Across Asia as well, consumers are increasingly seeking more animal protein from chickens.

Cargill Meats (Thailand) Limited,  has been in the Thai poultry industry for more than 25 years, and today it operates a fully integrated poultry processing business across 14 locations, employing more than 13,500 people. One of the country’s top exporters, it produces a wide range of fully cooked, frozen chicken products, more than 80 percent of which are shipped to Japan, Hong Kong, Europe and Canada.
