FiTS2, a new technology development by ABB Turbocharging, brings to the marine industry uniquely new levels of fuel savings and flexibility.

FiTS2 stands for “Flexible integrated Turbocharging System for 2-Stroke Engines” a technology ABB Turbocharging developed in collaboration with WinG&D, a leading two-stroke engine manufacturer. 

With FiTS2, operators of large marine applications running on two-stroke engines can benefit from maximum fuel savings at part and low load while maintaining highest flexibility to go to full output immediately. 

FiTS2 denotes a complete, integrated turbocharging system that consists of sequential turbochargers of different specifications and wide compressor maps. As the name suggests, two or more turbochargers operate in sequence to complement each other’s air delivery at different engine loads. The turbochargers are controlled by specially developed FiTS2 tuning software, combined with dedicated, flow optimized valves that can operate under full load.

Why FiTS2?

Unprecedented fuel savings

The system enables fuel savings of up to 8 grams per kWh
(3 – 5 percent) compared with fuel consumption levels typically achievable with conventional turbocharging systems on low-speed diesel engines. Depending on the price of fuel and the load profile to be met by the engine, fuel savings over ten years can amount to 500,000 USD for a very large crude carrier (VLCC)
and well over 1 million USD for a container vessel.

Unmatched flexibility

With FiTS2, a fast switch can be achieved under load without interruption. Operators do not have to experience any downtime due to load switching. They can increase engine output up to full load without disruption. This is especially beneficial as the operator can rapidly – and safely – adapt his engine’s performance to suit his immediate needs; slow steaming to save fuel and faster steaming to fulfill more demanding freight contract conditions without compromising on performance.
