Career paths and development

Project manager

Our project managers have anywhere from one to 40-plus years of experience.

Project managers usually start their careers by mastering project planning and scheduling.

As they progress, learning on the job from senior colleagues and form our world-class learning and development programs, they gain new skills and experience in specialized areas. These include:
  • Project risk management
  • Project contract management
  • Project leadership
  • Management and communications

For some, the right path is to become a project director and lead our most complex projects. These include:
  • High-voltage direct current grids
  • Offshore wind farm connections
  • Complex automation systems in huge petrochemical plants or refineries

Professional qualifications

What we look for

Project Management profile

Experience in managing projects of different sizes, complexity and contractual types
  • Highly organized and focused on results; demonstrable ability to plan, schedule and monitor complex technical projects, delivering on time and budget
  • Strong aptitude for financials; ability to understand and deliver on contracts 
  • Capacity to identify and reduce risk

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with domain experience in ABB businesses
  • IPMA or PMP® (Project Management Institute) qualified or certified by a major ABB competitor

Information and reporting skills
  • Fully aware of financial and schedule status of assigned projects; able at any time to make a verbal or written report, with a minimum of effort
  • Clearly present project status in formal reviews and to customers, with appropriate detail for desired understanding, eg to assure payment, set expectations, etc.
  • Raise potential project issues to relevant stakeholders

People skills
  • Good communicator, open-minded and responsive
  • Able to satisfy customers, even when under great pressure; can work with colleagues across the business, obtaining the necessary services, materials and equipment from external and internal suppliers
  • Ability to encourage openness, respect; capable of building trust, confidence and loyalty with customers and partners
  • Promote healthy work-life balance within the project team
