Supply Chain Management

Constant focus, constant improvement

In the 21st century, it is no longer just companies but supply chains that compete.

Every year, ABB utilizes millions of products and services in over 200 categories from thousands of suppliers all over the world. Our goal is to create a supply base that works as an extended enterprise for us, creating value through constantly improving quality, technology, logistics, and so on, while optimizing cost.

We develop relationships worldwide to strengthen our network of suppliers and source everything the business needs to design, manufacture, sell and service our portfolio of highly sophisticated engineering products and services around the world.

Whether we are buying and hedging copper, high-tech components or sourcing engineering consulting services, operating a world-class supply chain organization means having twin goals: increasing our competitiveness and helping our customers to succeed.

Why ABB for Supply Chain Management?

ABB is probably one of the most internationally diversified companies in the world, based on our culture and geographic footprint. It does not matter where you come from or with which accent you speak English – all that matters is how good you are and how well you fit in with the team. Our business is performed locally even as our supply chains are global. This provides, especially for SCM personnel, interesting challenges in working “glocally”.

We constantly improve the development of our global supply chain teams. We get involved in early stage technology and product development; leveraging world-class supply chain management processes, tools and systems across the function. We make investments in SCM and leadership training to help us create one of the best supply chains in the world in our industry.

That means there are practically limitless opportunities to develop your expertise and get the experience you need for a world-class career, whether you specialize in supply chain disciplines or transportation and logistics.

Our 3,000-plus SCM employees work in more than 100 countries, and we source from most countries in the world. So, the majority of your work will have an international dimension. There are excellent opportunities to move around the world, if you are interested.

The exceptional people you work with, the unique projects you tackle and the global scale of our business will give you the skills and experience you need to take your career to the next level.

Career paths and development

Supply chain manager

As you learn – on the job and in our world-class development programs – you will find new ways to solve problems and strengthen your ability to resolve difficult issues in creative ways.

Entry-level employees start as buyers, SCM analysts or administrators in transportation and logistics, working mainly locally, sometimes already regionally or globally. They build expertise in all relevant areas, such as strategic sourcing, SCM finance, negotiation, contract management, project management, operational purchasing and transport and logistics.

With the right skills and experience, they advance to the next level, leading SCM or transport and logistics at the local, country, regional or divisional level or building specialist expertise in their chosen category field. Managers and specialists use their skills and expertise to design strategies based on sound SCM practices and then implement solutions, locally and globally.

Our senior SCM managers and specialists are internationally recognized leaders and contributors in their field. They advise on advanced SCM solutions, also acting as mentors within the SCM community and championing the discipline in the wider business.

Professional qualifications

We depend on your growth and development because the more you make of your talent, the better we do as a company.

So, in addition to the personalized development plans that we agree on with all our employees, we also support you in obtaining professional qualifications, such as those offered by the Institute of Supply Management (ISM).

Alternative career possibilities

Career flexibility is a key ABB principle. We always try to support you when your interests and priorities change, helping you move between countries, divisions, business units and functions. It is one of the main advantages of working for a truly global business with a very broad portfolio of products and services.

Depending on your skills and experience, there would be opportunities in such areas as Marketing and Sales, Finance, Manufacturing, Operational Excellence and Quality or Project Management.
