ABB Compact Secondary Substation solutions for Wind turbine electrification

ABB CSS Unipack Wind compact secondary substations are designed for connection of decentralized wind power plants to the public network.

The power transformer inside the substation is utilized for energy transformation from typical low voltage generator output to medium voltage, according to secondary distribution network parameters.

Unipack Wind substations are designed, type- and routine tested in conformity with all applicable IEC standards to provide safety and low-cost life cycle.

Unipack Wind substations are produced in steel and include GRP (Glass-fiber Reinforced Polyester) enclosures, providing natural ventilation, low transportation cost, simplicity of installation and high reliability. GRP is a unique, very robust and corrosion-free material that could serve on the sea shore installations and in other extreme conditions. GRP does not dampen radio-waves and, therefore, are Smart Grid friendly.

A variety of ABB Smart Grid solutions, providing remote monitoring, control and measurements are available for all Unipack Wind substations in steel and GRP enclosures.

ABB NALFWind switch-fuse combination for windfarm application

The NALFWind is a high performance 36kV air insulated load break switch with integrated fast acting current limiting fuses. It now offers something that has not been previously possible in this type of air- insulated switch technology, since the extended breaking performance of load break switches in terms of the range of transfer current value and the superior time current characteristic of fuses enables the increased maximum output of the protected transformer. This provides a safe and also very cost effective solution for the wind industry. The NALFWind is adapted to 36 kV – the voltage level which is now standard for both wind turbines and peripherals. NALFWind’s high breaking capabilities make it possible to protect transformers up to 3000 kVA with CEF-S-TCU fast acting fuses. It is offered as the standard configuration with an earthing switch with 40 kA making capability. All this means that NALFWind creates completely new possibilities in many different applications.

ABB Relion IEDs for wind farm interconnection protection

Traditionally distributed generation units have been required to be disconnected during utility grid faults without any specific requirements to support utility grid.
Today’s distributed generation units are connected to the grid and growing in size, with an increasing demand for higher grid stability and reliability as a result.
When the amount of distributed generation units increases it will be more common that utility grid stability supporting functionalities are also required from DG units (grid codes).

The aim of the session is to present the techniques for interconnection protection for the wind farms. The main focus of the presentation is in the features of the directional reactive power undervoltage protection, low-voltage ride-through protection and voltage vector shift protection.

Medium Voltage SF6 gas insulated switchgears is the most commonly used solution for protection, connection and controlling the high voltage side of the wind farm radial. Its size and flexibility makes it the best solution for installations inside the wind tower for both, onshore and offshore purposes, as well as in Compact Secondary Subtations (CSS).
The aim of the session is to show the advantages of SafePlus MV Switchgears with respect to safety of operators, climatic and environmental conditions and accessibility/flexibility in installation.

Advanced design and control solutions for grid integration

A wind power plant and a traditional coal- or gas-fired turbine power plant both make electricity, but their generating processes are fundamentally different, which means the requirements of their control and automation systems are also very different. Symphony Plus for Wind, a scalable and flexible SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system monitors and controls individual wind farms and an entire portfolio of plants alike. With support for a broad range of communication protocols, Symphony Plus for Wind provides a single point of monitoring and control of a wind power plant. It monitors all equipment, from wind turbines and meteorological stations to substation equipment and reactive power compensation devices such as capacitor and inductor banks and STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator).

Alternative generator voltages for wind turbines

A number of factors, including increasing turbine power and demanding grid requirements, are challenging the position of 690 V as the de facto standard in most wind turbines.
Increasing power levels mean higher currents and therefore higher I²R losses, unless the voltage is increased. By increasing and optimizing the turbine voltage it would be possible to improve both the CAPEX and OPEX of wind power activities.
OEMs and electrical component manufacturers are already using voltages other than 690 V in new turbine designs, but rather than a case-by-case approach or manufacturer specific voltages, a new standard voltage for wind turbines would benefit the entire industry.

Line Voltage Regulator increases grid capacity for wind power

The session presents the problematics when connecting new wind turbines or smaller wind farms to existing distribution grids. They cause a rise of voltage in the network which can quickly exceed the allowed voltage range. Instead of reinforcing the grid or putting up new medium voltage lines, a Line Voltage Regulator can be installed. This provides a flexible solution, which can be quickly realized, at much lower costs. The functioning of the Line Voltage Regulator is explained, and its technical specifications and an application example are presented.

New E3 certification for dry type transformers up to 36 kV

ABB has developed a new design for compact windmill transformers in order to meet the most demanding requirements, according to the environmental conditions where transformers have to operate. Environmental class E3 up to 36 kV voltage level was successfully tested in KEMA (Netherlands), which means our dry-type transformers can operate at the most severe conditions, specified in the IEC 60076-16: IP00 transformers for wind turbine applications to be installed in off-shore wind farms.

Wind Retrofit services for a new lease of life of aging wind turbines

New lease of life for aging wind turbines ? Certainly!
As the wind energy market has matured, assets are aging, reducing the efficiency of the turbines. Many of these turbines are past the end of their warranty period, but attention is still required to maintain an aging fleet whether for existing installed base or used turbines being dismantled and sold for community use in second-hand market.
This presentation covers the benefits of a solution to maintaining these aged fleets – refurbishment and retrofit of different types of turbines by installing a full power converter. Wind retrofitting enables wind turbines to work at variable speeds by controlling the system torque and allowing the maximum power transfer between the wind and turbine blades.
This retrofit will increase in productivity as it takes advantage of low winds, and will result in improved quality of power and reliability, and a reduction in mechanical stress resulting in an extended lifetime of the turbine.
