ABB CSS UniPack Wind compact secondary substations (CSS) are designed for connection of decentralized wind power plants to the public network.

The power transformer inside the substation is utilized for energy transformation from typical low voltage generator output to medium voltage, according to secondary distribution network parameters.

UniPack Wind substations are designed, type- and routine tested in conformity with all applicable IEC standards to provide safety and low-cost life cycle.

UniPack Wind substations are produced in steel or GRP (Glass-fiber Reinforced Polyester) enclosures, providing natural ventilation, low transportation cost, simplicity of installation and high reliability. GRP is a unique, very robust and corrosion-free material that could serve on the sea shore installations and in other extreme conditions. GRP does not dampen radio-waves and, therefore, are smart grid friendly.

A variety of ABB smart grid solutions, providing remote monitoring, control and measurements are available for all UniPack Wind substations in steel and GRP enclosures.

ABB NALFWind switch-fuse combination for windfarm application

The NALFWind is a high performance 36kV air insulated load break switch with integrated fast acting current limiting fuses. It now offers something that has not been previously possible in this type of air- insulated switch technology, since the extended breaking performance of load break switches in terms of the range of transfer current value and the superior time current characteristic of fuses enables the increased maximum output of the protected transformer. This provides a safe and also very cost effective solution for the wind industry. The NALFWind is adapted to 36 kV – the voltage level which is now standard for both wind turbines and peripherals. NALFWind’s high breaking capabilities make it possible to protect transformers up to 3000 kVA with CEF-S-TCU fast acting fuses. It is offered as the standard configuration with an earthing switch with 40 kA making capability. All this means that NALFWind creates completely new possibilities in many different applications.

Is-limiter for wind power applications

High short-circuit fault currents are well known in wind power applications. Those short-circuit currents can lead to severe damage of the installed equipment.

It is a common challenge that the short-circuit withstand capability of the grid injection point is very limited. The wind turbine can in such cases not be connected to the respective grid injection point and it is therefore not possible to take advantage of the renewable energy production. The Is-limiter limits the fault contribution of the wind turbines which can thus be connected to the grids injection point regardless of the short-circuit withstand capability.

Line Voltage Regulator increases grid capacity for wind power

The session presents the problematics when connecting new wind turbines or smaller wind farms to existing distribution grids. They cause a rise of voltage in the network which can quickly exceed the allowed voltage range. Instead of reinforcing the grid or putting up new medium voltage lines, a Line Voltage Regulator can be installed. This provides a flexible solution, which can be quickly realized, at much lower costs. The functioning of the Line Voltage Regulator is explained, and its technical specifications and an application example are presented.

UFES for wind power applications

An arc fault is the most serious fault within a switchgear system. The Ultra-Fast Earthing Switch UFES is an active arc fault protection system that does not only effectively eliminates the internal arc hazard for people, it also offers protection against damage or destruction of system components.

Wind turbines affected by an internal arc fault are likely to be shut down until repaired. Since the repair costs of remote wind turbine installations, especially offshore, are significantly higher and repair is more difficult than under normal conditions the UFES contributes to diminish these effects.
