ABB’s transmission experience also enables us to address the engineering challenges of erecting the massive structures needed to create an offshore power-generation plant. To minimize the risks posed in such an unforgiving environment, ABB developed the Gravity Based Structure (GBS) to accommodate HVDC converter stations. These self-contained platforms include all sub-systems and facilities—ventilation and air conditioning, water, sewage, cooling, backup diesel generators, etc.—required to support platform operation.
