Driven by Vietnam's thriving economy and the attendant rising middle class, the demand for power regularly grows above GDP. Statistics shows what power consumption in the industrial sector accounts for 55 - 60% of total electricity output while that of the households accounts for around 35 -40%. This has raised concerns with the possible expansion of the power sector's reliance on coal-fired electricity generation which harms the environment, contributes to global climate change, and is exposed to risk of supply disruption from imported fuel resources.
ABB endorses the new approaches to attract investment and provide more options for procuring renewable energy such as the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA) mechanism. DPPA will allow businesses and suppliers to purchase electricity directly from renewable energy projects and receive it through the existing national electricity grid, while ensuring fair and equitable treatment for all parties involved.

In 2016, 55% of ABB global revenues were related to energy efficiency, renewable energy and eco-efficiency. The Company also had more than 280 energy efficiency projects under way last year. ABB built solar plants on the roofs of our factories in Helsinki, Beijing, Dubai and South Africa. ABB is currently planning to build a pilot solar plant at its medium and high voltage product factory in Bac Ninh province of Vietnam. In this project, ABB will incorporate smart (Industry 4.0) solutions using its latest ABB Ability systems to constantly monitor and optimize efficiency of the solar plant.
