Story of solar-powered LED lighting at ABB in Vietnam

Although there is no Solar Impulse airplane at ABB in Vietnam, we have another device which also used solar energy since the end of 2013. That is LED system using solar battery to operate.

The LED went into operation with 4 bulds which have been added to this lighting system serving public area since December 2014. It not only contributes to reduce energy expenditure but also minimizes negative impacts on environment. Although the saving of 7,008 KWH/year electric energy is still quite small, but using the system helps to reduce 2.8 tons of CO2 per year which is really an impressive result:

Solar energy lighting 4 0.1 12 1,752 0
Electric Energy saved: 7008 KWH/ year

Expenditure on electricity consumption saved: $701

Reduction of CO2: 2,8 tons of CO2

Especially, during sunny days of June as now, taking advantage of abundant energy source is very effective. In order to bring you more understanding about our "special friends" LED, we already made a quick interview with LEDs about how they are working in our factory in Ha noi.

Reporter: Hi, sould you please introduce briefly about yourself?

LED: Hi, My name is LED, which stands for Light-Emitting-Diode. We were born in the early years of the 20th century, and have been continuously developed until now. From the first Light-Emitting-Diode with monochromatic weak light, nowadays, we've become a polychromy source which enables huge capacity and high lighting efficiency.

Reporter: So you can explain more about how you work and operate?

LED: Solar panels have function to transform solar energy into electricity energy. The output voltage of the system is direct current voltage, energy generated by the panels through the charging controller to charge the battery. We're going to be connected to the above loading controller. In lighting systems, the controller which senses the light via panels will work to discharge battery to feed the lights when it's dark.

Reporter: Readers have a small wonder that during winter time or rain when there is no sun, how can you complete your work?

LED: In unfavorable weather conditions, we're still able to work within 3 days without sunshine. In case there is still no sunshine, we can combine to charge offset electricity by grid power. Obviously, lighting by solar cells has advantages that it is not only economical but also energy saving, friendly and sustainable with environment, right?

Reporter: Exactly LED! By the way, can you help our readers understand more about how did you overcome formidable opponents - High voltage Lamp?

LED: Haha, on this point, we're proud of having many advantages over high voltage lamps, such as: higher lighting efficiency than incandescent bulbs, manual color emission, quick on and off switch right after being effected (microseconds), the brightness can be easily controled by methods of electrical impulses alteration or electrical current control... We are also able to light from about 35,000 to 50,000 hours - many times larger than fluorescent and incandescent lamps. It is difficult to be destroyed by the impacts due to the semiconductor material and most of all, we are not toxic but very environmental friendly.

Reporter: Thanks for your sincere sharing, Led. Hopefully we will soon have the opportunity to meet again to talk more about the achievements that you do for the Company. I wish you are always energetic as you now!
