New switchgear configuration options enable flexibility and savings

ABB enhances its medium-voltage arc-resistant switchgear offering with new features that can be uniquely configured to provide value and space savings

ABB today announced the latest innovation to its SafeGear® product line. SafeGear can now be delivered with two potential transformers (PTs) in the same space as the industry standard height for a single PT.

ABB’s innovative design, requiring only 19 inches of space for PT compartments, provides the capability of further reducing what is already recognized as the smallest available footprint in the industry. Available across all kA ratings, up to 50 kA 0.5s Type 2B arc resistant, this enhancement notably improves system design through the optimized use of space, requiring only half the space for a single PT compartment compared to the next most competitive MV switchgear on the market.

This SafeGear product line enhancement enables two sets of PTs to be installed in one 38-inch compartment, potentially reducing the number of frames required and providing an overall smaller footprint. When only one set of PTs is required, the smaller 19-inch design allows the provision of a much larger low voltage compartment.

“Market feedback tells us that space utilization is at a premium and any opportunity to reduce footprint is a true efficiency gain,” said Craig Wicker, Global Marketing Manager of ABB Electrification Products, Distribution Solutions – ANSI Switchgear. “Reducing footprint requirements of power distribution equipment allows our customers to make better use of space for their own operations, enabling them to improve their production potential and revenue generation.”

ABB is the first to provide this combination of features, creating advantages to the trusted and reliable SafeGear product line and delivering innovations with tangible benefits. ABB’s background in switchgear solutions and system design enables the creation of configurations that address a broad range of market segments and unique customer applications.
