Additional Information

ABB Field Information Manager Learning Center

Loop Check represents a functionality that is bound strongly to the used system connectivity.
This section describes preconditions to perform Loop Check with ABB System 800xA and gives advise what to adjust in case of failing Loop Check.

In order to pass Loop Check, the complete communication loop from the used system to the field device and back needs to be configured correctly. If available, the imported and used Loop Check Settings have to be taken into account as well.

A failing Loop Check indicates a mismatch between the configuration within the used system, the field device and the imported Loop Check Settings.

Loop Check in Field Information Manager supports only positive linear signal curves.

Requirements

Software
  • ABB System 800xA Version 6.1 onwards.
  • ABB FIM Bridge 800xA 2.5 onwards.
  • ABB FIM 2.2.1 onwards.

Hardware

  • ABB Select I/O (Full Support).
  • ABB S800 I/O (No automatic Loop Check with Authorization for analog output nodes).
  • ABB S900 I/O (No Underrange/Overrange for analog input .nodes and no automatic Loop Check with Authorization for analog output nodes)

Field Devices
  • Support of simulation mode (HART command 40).
  • For Check of Underrange and Overrange, ensure that simulation mode supports signal ranges of less than 4 mA and more than 20 mA.
  • For Loop Check of Analog Output Field Devices (like actuators, valves or positioners), ensure that the required medium (e.g. like pressured air) is connected so that the field device can move.

Architecture
  • Logged-in user has a valid configured password to authenticate execution of Loop Check for analog output channels. (empty password not allowed).
    • As these can cause moving parts in the system (due to e.g. moving actuators, valves, etc.), entering this password is required before each Loop Check of analog output nodes due to safety reasons.
    • Empty passwords are not allowed as they do not fulfill the requirement for safe execution.
  • OPC Service of ABB System 800xA is activated and connected to the system.
    • In System 800xA node, open "AC 800M OPC Server Configuration Panel" and ensure that the status of OPC DA is OK.
    • In OPC Data Source Definition in Engineering Workplace, ensure that the Service Group is assigned correctly.800xA_OPC_Service_Group
  • ABB FIM Bridge 800xA is installed and configured according to instructions from documentation.
  • User for ABB FIM Bridge 800xA needs to have Operator rights.

General Configuration

  • Synchronization of Field Device Configuration, ABB System 800xA Configuration and imported Loop Check Settings Configuration (CSV / Signal List) is required so that a Loop Check can be passed.
  • A failing Loop Check is an accepted result and indicates a mismatch between the 3 configurations.
  • Only positive linear signal curves are supported.
  • Generic device packages are sufficient in FIM for execution of Loop Check.

  • Field Device Configuration

    • Field Device configuration has to match with configuration in ABB System 800xA and imported Loop Check Settings (CSV / Signal List).
      • Field Device configuration can be done via FIM.
    • Unit (e.g. % or degC) has to be configured correctly.
      • Send down configuration of unit to field device first, before configuring other options in the next steps.
    • Lower range value and upper range value have to be configured correctly.
    • For Check of Underrange and Overrange, please ensure that the tested field device supports the values below 4 mA and above 20 mA, i.e. outside the defined signal range.
      • If the tested field device does not support the values for Underrange and Overrange, the Loop Check cannot be performed completely and is interrupted.
    • For Analog Output: Information about which HART variable provides the position feedback is required for configuration in ABB System 800xA.
      • This can be different for each field device type.

    System Configuration (ABB System 800xA)

    General System Configuration
    • Loop Check for Shared I/O is not supported currently. Please ensure that the Loop Check in FIM happens through the correct Controller as configured within system.

    Configuration for Analog Input Signals
    • Configuration of application and channel at I/O Module has to be correct so that Loop Check can work.
    • Usage of an application is mandatory to enable the nodes (e.g. the channels of I/O modules).
    • A variable of type "RealIO" and direction "in" has to be defined within the used application.
    • The variable is assigned to the channel of the I/O module in the tab "Settings".
    • In the tab "Properties" of the I/O module, the following settings have to be configured:
      • Channel unit, min and max values have to match the field device configuration (e.g. -50 to +50 degC).
      • The parameter "Fraction" has to be set to "1".
      • The parameter "Inverted" has to be set to "false".

    Configuration for Analog Output Signals
    • Configuration of application and channel at I/O Module has to be correct so that Loop Check can work.
    • Usage of an application is mandatory to enable the channels of I/O modules.
    • Only Function Blocks are supported for Analog Output Signals, no Control Modules.
    • A variable of type "RealIO" and direction "out" has to be defined within the used application.
    • The variable is assigned to the channel of the I/O module in the tab "Settings".
    • In the tab "Properties" of the I/O module, the following settings have to be configured.
    • In the tab "Settings" of the HART node below the I/O module, the HART Device Variable 1 has to be set to the HART variable providing the position feedback of the field device.

    Troubleshooting

    Initial Problems

    • Loop Check result is not "Not available".
      • Connection status of the field device is "Disconnected".
      • Open device views of the field device (e.g. Device Settings).
      • Field device does not support required HART commands.
    • Connection to field devices connected to I/O modules is interrupted.
      • Check if HART Passthrough setting is activated on the I/O module.
    • Topology View with Loop Check Controller does not present I/O structure.
      • Check that Control Builder M is online so that Loop Check Controller is in operation.

    Problems during Loop Check Execution

    • Output channel is not forced.
      • Check if the user executing the FIM Bridge 800xA service has operator rights.
      • Check if Function Blocks are used in application (Control Modules are not supported).
    • Interaction with nodes in the system does not work properly, i.e. problems in forcing and reading values appear.
      • Check if the node is configured at another Controller. Loop Check for shared I/O is not supported currently.
      • Ensure that the Loop Check in FIM happens through the correct Controller as configured within system.

    Problems after Loop Check Execution

    • Measured values are different from expected values.
      • Check scaling in field device settings, e.g. via FIM.
      • Check scaling of node (e.g. I/O module) in Control Builder M.
    • Values tested by of 5-/9-Point test are inverted.
      • Check parameter "Inverted" in I/O module settings.
      • Check scaling and curve settings field device device settings.
    • Test Routine is passed, but Underrange and Overrange are not tested correctly.
      • Check if the field device supports the values below 4 mA and above 20 mA, i.e. outside the defined signal range.
      • Check configuration of NAMUR NE 43, Underrange and Overrange levels for the I/O module.
    • Empty fields for measured values
      • Check correct OPC configuration and if ABB System 800xA itself is able to receive live values.
    • Alarm Limits are not tested correctly
      • Check settings of Function Block / Control Module and ensure that Alarms are enabled and configured properly.
      • Check if the alarm conditions (e.g. "High High") in the Function Block / Control Module of the system application match the alarm conditions configured for the channel in Loop Check of FIM.
    • Some Alarm Limits are passed and others are failed.
      • Check alarm configuration in ABB System 800xA.
      • Check alarm configuration in imported Loop Check Settings (CSV / Signal List).
    • The going Alarm is not gone.
      • In configuration of used Function Block / Control Module, check if the setting "Latched" is set to false.
      • In faceplate of the used Function Block / Control Module, check if the setting "Hysteresis" it set to 0.00.
