ABB supplies, commissions, and starts up the digital control system for operation, control and monitoring of Santa Vitória Açúcar e Álcool (SVAA) - the most modern and automated ethanol and cogeneration plant in Brazil, located in Minas Gerais State.

The most automated ethanol and cogeneration plant in Brazil

The 800xA System will run all main processes including the sugar cane reception, preparation and extraction, juice treatment, distillation, ethanol storage and distribution as well as boilers (steam generation) and power generation. Cooling towers, conveyors, compressed air system and the water treatment and distribution will also be under the system’s control and operation.

The scope of supply includes panels, boxes and fiber optic connections, switches, operation and engineering stations, as well as software licenses, programming engineering support, logic, operation displays, commissioning and start-up.

Scalable solution

The 800xA system provides a better way to achieve measurable productivity and profitability as it includes all automation functions in a single operation and control environment and also provides a scalable solution that spans and integrates loop, units, areas, and inter plant controls. Another benefit is the easy integration with ABB or third parties drives, starters or field instruments. In addition, the 800xA system has solutions for advanced controls such as batch management, information management, maintenance management and network management.

"The solution provided is able to reduce the risk of accidents, augment operational efficiency, and reduce the use of electricity, in addition to assist the production supervision by integrating data and information throughout the plant, in a one single place", said Ronaldo Tarcha, ABB Control Technologies business unit manager in Brazil.

Industrial Operations Center

The deployment of SVAA's alcohol-chemical complex was divided into two stages. The first, which is already concluded, included the building of an ethanol plant to produce 240 million liters of hydrated ethylic alcohol fuel (AEHC) with a crushing capacity of 2.7 million tons / year of sugarcane, and 40 MW cogeneration.

"We use the same safety standards adopted by the chemical industry, which is a benchmark in the matter. Therefore, we have the plant with the highest level of automation and safety in the industry. Nearly all operations are automated, and this is made through the Industrial Operations Center (IOC), which provides greater safety, efficiency, and productivity to the plant. To ensure the operations as well as our employees' safety, we have a complete firefighting system in all sectors of the industrial park", explains Eide Garcia, SVAA’s general manager.
